In a major milestone for India’s clean energy transition, GEON, the future technologies division of Kabra Extrusiontechnik Ltd, has successfully integrated and commissioned a 2.88 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda in Gujarat, marking one of the country’s largest utility-scale battery storage projects and reinforcing the strategic importance of energy storage in the nation’s renewable power landscape.
Completed within an impressive five-month timeframe, the project is now fully commercially operational and represents a significant leap towards ensuring reliable, flexible and round-the-clock delivery of renewable energy to the national grid.
Located in Khavda, which is rapidly evolving into one of India’s premier clean energy hubs, the project forms a crucial component of the region’s expanding renewable energy ecosystem.
GEON executed the complete integration and commissioning of the project, including the deployment of Power Conditioning Systems (PCS), transformers and advanced Energy Management Systems (EMS), creating an intelligent infrastructure capable of enhancing grid stability and optimising renewable energy utilisation.

The commissioning comes at a time when investments in battery energy storage systems are accelerating across India, driven by ambitious renewable energy targets and the increasing need for grid balancing solutions capable of supporting a cleaner and more resilient electricity network.
Looking ahead, GEON is strengthening its long-term commitment to India’s energy storage ecosystem by advancing plans for a domestic Battery Energy Storage System gigafactory, a move expected to enhance local manufacturing capabilities, reduce import dependence and support the country’s vision of energy self-reliance.
