In Mayiladuthurai, fans performed traditional milk abhishekams on towering cut-outs of Vijay.
In Chennai, iconic theatres including Rohini SilverScreens, Woodlands and Casino were decorated with imposing ‘Jana Nayagan’ hoardings.
One hoarding hailed Vijay as “the one and only power centre” of Tamil Nadu.
Fans also visited temples to offer prayers for the success of the film.
In a town near Chennai, a specially designed chariot-like vehicle was used to welcome the release with royal grandeur.
Another fan painted a luxury car with larger-than-life images of Vijay.
Thousands appeared in custom “Thangamey Thalapathy” T-shirts.
At the Tamil Nadu–Kerala border in Kanyakumari, fans organised a DJ party and cake-cutting celebration.
And the phenomenon went global.
Japanese fans, some dressed in traditional kimonos, were seen celebrating the release at Rohini Cinemas in Chennai—an image that captured the international reach of Vijay’s stardom.
The emotion of the last film
In Coimbatore, Minister V Sampath Kumar joined fans to watch the film and described the moment as deeply emotional.
“This is a very emotional moment for us. My primary identity has always been that of a fan. For 30 years, I was a fan first. The position of Minister is a responsibility given to me by the Chief Minister, but seeing his final film brings a heavy heart. We are bearing this pain because we realise that the state and our people need him as the Chief Minister.”
In Chennai, Minister Arun Raj highlighted Vijay’s discipline and work ethic.
“He worked in cinema with absolute dedication, sincerity, and discipline for over 30 years. It is easy to label someone an actor, but behind his number one position was immense hard work and punctuality. Because he knew he could not do two jobs at the same time, he left cinema completely and entered politics. He is showing the exact same dedication in politics now.”
The release also witnessed the presence of prominent figures, including music composer Anirudh Ravichander, Speaker JCD Prabhakar, actress Keerthy Suresh, Senior Minister N Anand and producer Venkat Narayana.
Fans now see themselves as the ‘shoulders’ of the chief minister
The transition from superstar to Chief Minister has also changed the way some fans see their own role.
In Madurai, fan Kaniraj said:
“Usually, if the police told us to stop our celebrations, we would argue fiercely. But today, we listened to them. He sits as a Chief Minister now, and we must not bring any disrepute to his name. Under the instructions of our MLA Musthafa, we ensured our festival did not cause any public disturbance.”
In Namakkal, a fan brought his young daughter to the theatre, saying:
“She skipped school for this because it is her first and his last film in theatres.”
Another fan offered perhaps the most revealing description of the transition:
“He was Thalapathy on screen, but now he has reached a new place. We will be his shoulders and stand solidly behind his political success.”
That sentence may well capture the larger meaning of ‘Jana Nayagan’.
The actor’s fan clubs have long been powerful social organisations.
Now, with Vijay having moved fully into politics, the emotional energy of fandom is being reimagined as political loyalty.
A release that survived delay, certification battle and the leak
The film’s journey to the screen was anything but smooth.
Originally scheduled for an earlier release, ‘Jana Nayagan’ faced delays linked to the certification process. The film ultimately received an ‘A’ certificate and was locked for a worldwide theatrical release on July 23.
The prolonged uncertainty led to intense speculation among fans and distributors.
Then came an even bigger crisis.
Portions of the unreleased film surfaced online before its theatrical release.
The leak triggered criminal investigations and legal action by the makers.
The Cyber Crime Department arrested six people in connection with the alleged online leak, while the Madras High Court denied bail to two accused after prosecutors told the Court that the unreleased film had allegedly been watched online by millions before certification.
The production team also warned that downloading, saving or forwarding unauthorised leaked footage could invite criminal proceedings.
Director H. Vinoth later explained why Vijay did not make a public appeal regarding the leak, saying that the issue was being handled as a legal matter and that a public intervention could have invited unnecessary political controversy.
The leak, however, failed to extinguish the theatrical hunger.

Kamal Haasan linked the controversy to broader systemic concerns, including delays and lapses in the certification process, and argued for clearly defined timelines for film certification.

The debate became a larger conversation about piracy, certification systems, industry safeguards and the vulnerabilities of major Indian film productions.
What does the world say? The early verdict is divided
The first reviews have produced a sharply divided picture.
Vijay’s fans have celebrated his screen presence, action sequences, mass moments, emotional farewell and Anirudh Ravichander’s music.

The Week called it an exhausting three-hour political campaign presented as a film, while criticising its lack of focus.
Other reviews have been considerably more favourable, praising the film as an emotional farewell packed with political undertones and fan service.

And the box office will ultimately determine which force proves stronger.
The price of fandom: Ticket controversy clouds the celebrations
The celebrations were not without controversy.
Some fans alleged that ticket prices had been inflated, with claims on social media of tickets being sold at ₹500–₹800 at certain theatres and black-market prices reportedly touching ₹2,000.
The allegations require verification on a theatre-by-theatre basis.
The controversy also revived a familiar question:
How far should fan demand and market economics be allowed to push ticket prices for a film that has already generated unprecedented hype?
For the industry, this is an important issue because a blockbuster opening cannot come at the cost of alienating ordinary families.

‘Jana Nayagan’ occupies a unique place in Tamil cinema and Tamil Nadu politics.
Vijay has become only the second Tamil Nadu Chief Minister after M.G. Ramachandran to have a film released while serving as Chief Minister.
