When an IIT’s research horsepower meets an AI organisation’s ambition to turn cutting-edge science into real-world innovation, the result can be far bigger than a memorandum on paper. In a significant step towards strengthening Gujarat’s emerging artificial intelligence ecosystem, IIT Gandhinagar (IITGN) and Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO) have joined hands to create a collaborative platform spanning advanced AI research, education, infrastructure, innovation and talent development.
The two institutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at building a stronger ecosystem for AI research while creating new avenues for academic and research collaboration.
The partnership assumes added significance with IAIRO located in GIFT City, adjacent to IIT Gandhinagar, potentially creating a powerful geographical and intellectual bridge between academic research and applied AI innovation.
From research labs to real-world AI
Under the MoU, IITGN and IAIRO will collaborate on research projects, joint research-grant applications and efforts to develop AI infrastructure through external funding.
The partnership will also facilitate short courses, certificate programmes, conferences, seminars, workshops and other academic initiatives focused on artificial intelligence.

IAIRO is located in GIFT City, adjacent to IIT Gandhinagar and this collaboration is a natural opportunity to build each other’s strengths.”
“AI is already changing the game in sectors like healthcare, life sciences and drug discovery, and will continue to expand across sectors. We combine our complementary expertise in research, talent development and innovation to deliver meaningful outcomes that contribute to India’s growing AI capabilities,” he added.
Talent pipeline gets an AI boost
The collaboration will promote academic exchange, with IITGN faculty members and researchers delivering lectures and training programmes for IAIRO scientists and engineers.
IAIRO experts, in turn, will participate in teaching, mentoring and research activities at IITGN. The MoU also provides for joint supervision of doctoral students, research internships and adjunct appointments, subject to institutional policies.

IAIRO eyes a bigger Gujarat AI Valley
The partnership also envisages shared access to research infrastructure and computational facilities, subject to institutional policies—potentially giving researchers and students access to capabilities needed for advanced AI experimentation and development.

The tie-up thus brings together research, education, infrastructure, talent and industry engagement under one collaborative framework, with the potential to transform proximity in GIFT City and Gandhinagar into deeper scientific collaboration.
