MAN’S BEST FRIEND: The film’s four-legged star shares a tender moment with child artist Maahi Rai.
  • A tender canine tale turns an abandoned Indie into the unlikely hero of a family’s journey from hurt to hope
  • Pankaj Tripathi anchors an emotionally rich ensemble as Maahi Rai makes a striking screen debut
  • Amit Rai chooses quiet humour, ordinary moments and shared imperfections over cinematic noise
  • More than a children’s film, ‘Ohh My Dog’ celebrates empathy, belonging, unconditional love—and the Indie

PREETI DAS

Sometimes a film doesn’t arrive with a roar—it pads softly into your heart, curls up beside your emotions and refuses to leave. ‘Ohh My Dog’ is that rare kind of film. It has the innocence of a child, the loyalty of a dog and the emotional wisdom of a story that knows adults, too, desperately need reminding that love can find us when we least expect it.

There was a time when Hindi cinema made films for children without talking down to them—films that were playful yet profound, simple yet layered, and capable of leaving adults misty-eyed long after the credits rolled. Ohh My Dog is a heartwarming return to that tradition.

I watched the film at its premiere at Karnavati University, and what stayed with me wasn’t just the adorable canine or the laughter it evoked. It was the quiet reminder that love, healing, and belonging often arrive in the most unexpected forms.

The trio behind Ohh My Dog at the premiere, celebrating a film that puts friendship, family and an Indie dog at the heart of its story.

At its heart lies a beautiful truth: sometimes a human finds a dog, and sometimes a dog finds a human. The abandoned Indie at the centre of the story is not merely a pet looking for a home; he becomes the catalyst that helps an entire family rediscover hope, compassion, and one another. The screenplay delicately intertwines these journeys, celebrating the idea that companionship is never a one-way street.

A hero without a pedigree

The film also does something Hindi cinema has long neglected—it celebrates the Indie. For far too long, our screens have been dominated by pedigree dogs, while our own street dogs have remained invisible. Ohh My Dog gently reminds us that loyalty, intelligence, resilience, and unconditional love never needed a pedigree.

That is perhaps where the film scores its biggest emotional victory. It does not turn the Indie into a cute cinematic prop. Instead, the dog becomes a character in his own right—and, ultimately, a mirror to the humans around him.

Reel portrays real life with a different angle.

Director Amit Rai once again trusts the audience to feel rather than be told what to feel. The film finds beauty in ordinary moments, quiet humour, and deeply human relationships.

Its greatest magic, however, lies elsewhere. Ohh My Dog refuses to worship perfection. The Indie carries the marks of survival, while many of the humans carry their own visible and invisible fractures. It is through these shared imperfections that the film finds its deepest poetry.

No one here needs to become perfect to deserve love. They simply need to be seen.

A cast that lets emotions breathe

The performances are uniformly excellent. Pankaj Tripathi anchors the film with his trademark warmth and quiet dignity, while Pawan Malhotra, Geeta Agrawal Sharma, Rajesh Kumar, Shreedhar Dubey, Sulakhyana Baruah, and Vijay Mishra create a world that feels authentic and deeply lived in.

A special mention must be made of Maahi Rai, making a remarkable screen debut. There is such innocence and emotional honesty in the performance that every time the child appears on screen, you instinctively want to reach out and give them a hug.

A poignant scene from Ohh My Dog that captures the film’s celebration of companionship, innocence and unconditional love.

And perhaps that is the film’s greatest accomplishment: it makes tenderness feel cinematic without making it sentimental.

For children—and the child in every adult

As I walked out of the screening, I couldn’t help but think that children don’t need bigger films—they need better stories. Stories that nurture empathy instead of spectacle, kindness instead of cynicism, and hope instead of noise.

Ohh My Dog is more than a children’s film. It is a gentle reminder that sometimes, the family we are looking for is looking for us too.

VERDICT

A warm, soulful and quietly powerful tale of a dog, a child and a family learning that love does not ask where you came from—it simply asks whether you are willing to open your heart.
