PUDUCHERRY, AUG 9

A proud chapter was etched in the history of Puducherry’s police force on Sunday as the national Tricolour and the proud traditions of Indian policing converged at a glittering ceremony, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah presenting the prestigious President’s Colours to the Puducherry Police.

Today, with immense pride, honoured the Puducherry Police with the President's Colour, the highest award for a disciplined force.

The coveted honour is a recognition of dedicated service, professional policing and commitment to the safety and security of citizens, placing Puducherry Police among the distinguished police forces to receive the President’s Colours.

  • Recognition celebrates the force’s commitment to law and order, public safety and humanitarian service
  • Puducherry police initiatives strengthen community policing and crime prevention

  • Security tightened across the Union Territory for the high-profile national ceremony

The ceremony marked a moment of immense pride for the Union Territory and its police personnel, whose service extends from maintaining law and order and combating crime to community outreach, emergency response and humanitarian assistance.

A national honour for Puducherry’s men and women in uniform

The presentation of the President’s Colours represents more than a ceremonial distinction—it is a tribute to the courage, discipline and unwavering sense of duty of police personnel who serve citizens in challenging circumstances.

Puducherry Police had earlier highlighted initiatives including ‘Makkal Mandram’, Operation ‘Trishul’ and Operation ‘Punnagai’ as part of its efforts to strengthen law enforcement and public-oriented policing. Among other measures, these initiatives have focused on public grievance redressal, action against habitual offenders and efforts to prevent vulnerable youngsters from drifting into crime.

The award thus adds a significant national recognition to the force’s continuing efforts to combine firm law enforcement with people-centric policing.

Amit Shah’s Puducherry visit begins on a spiritual note

Shah had arrived in Puducherry on Saturday night after completing engagements in Maharashtra and visiting Arulmigu Arunachaleswarar Temple and Sri Ramana Maharshi Ashram in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. His visit to the revered Arunachaleswarar Temple included prayers and participation in the evening rituals associated with Lord Arunachaleswarar and Goddess Unnamulai Amman.

Temple priests accorded Union Home Minister a traditional welcome, following which he offered prayers and received prasadam from the temple authorities.

He subsequently visited the Sri Ramana Maharshi Ashram before proceeding to Puducherry.

On his arrival in the Union Territory, Shah was received by Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, and senior government representatives. Ministers, MPs and senior BJP leaders were also present.

Tight security for a ceremony of national significance

Security arrangements were significantly strengthened across Puducherry ahead of the President’s Colours ceremony.

More than 1,000 personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force and Puducherry Police were deployed at strategic locations, while vehicle checks were intensified at the Union Territory’s borders and within the city.

Traffic restrictions and diversions were introduced along Shah’s route from the Gorimedu border to Lok Bhavan, with additional measures on roads linking Lok Bhavan with Gorimedu and Puducherry airport.

Authorities also prohibited the operation of drones, unmanned aerial vehicles and other flying devices as part of the security arrangements.

From community policing to national recognition

The President’s Colours honour comes against the backdrop of Puducherry Police’s efforts to strengthen its policing architecture and deepen its engagement with citizens.

Earlier reports on the award noted the force’s initiatives to improve law and order, including Makkal Mandram, under which special camps were organised to receive public petitions and seek prompt solutions; Operation Trishul, aimed at taking action against history-sheeters and criminals; and Operation Punnagai, which sought to help school dropouts access technical education and steer them away from a possible life of crime.

The Puducherry Police website has also recorded preparations for the President’s Colour Presentation Ceremony, underlining the importance attached to the historic occasion.

A flag of honour, a force’s pledge of service

For the personnel of Puducherry Police, the President’s Colours stand as a symbol of trust earned through service and responsibility entrusted by the nation.

As the ceremonial Colours were presented, the occasion transcended the pageantry of a formal parade. It became a salute to every police officer who stands guard when citizens sleep, responds when emergencies strike and carries the responsibility of maintaining peace in the community.

The President’s Colours have now added a new emblem of honour to Puducherry Police—but the greater honour remains the everyday service of its men and women in uniform.

The presentation is particularly significant because the President’s Colours are regarded as one of the highest honours bestowed upon a police organisation in India, and the Puducherry Police had been preparing specifically for this presentation ceremony.
