Marking India’s 80th Independence Day with a call to turn the spirit of freedom into a shared responsibility for the nation’s future, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER) Vice Chancellor Dr Uma Sekar urged students and members of the SRIHER family to actively confront some of the country’s pressing social and environmental challenges.

Dr Uma Sekar hoisted the national flag and took the salute at the 80th Independence Day celebrations at SRIHER in Chennai on Saturday. Addressing the gathering, she said, “As a responsible citizen, we must work together to address the challenges we face today like unemployment, inequality, access to quality education, quality health, communal harmony and growing impact of climate change.”
Calling for collective action beyond the ceremonial celebration of Independence Day, the Vice Chancellor urged the SRIHER family to recognise that nation-building begins with responsible individual and institutional choices.
She called upon students, faculty and staff to take a pledge to conserve energy, safeguard nature and contribute towards building a cleaner and greener India.
The celebrations underscored SRIHER’s commitment to nurturing socially responsible professionals who can contribute not only to academic and healthcare excellence but also to the larger national goals of equity, sustainability and inclusive development.
