With the sea emerging simultaneously as a lifeline for Tamil Nadu’s fishing communities and a frontline of national security, Indian Coast Guard Director General Paramesh Sivamani and Chief Minister Joseph Vijay on Tuesday held deliberations aimed at making the State’s vast coastline safer, more secure and better prepared for maritime emergencies.

The meeting in Chennai brought coastal security and fishermen’s protection into sharp focus, with discussions covering maritime safety, search and rescue (SAR), prevention of illicit maritime activities, marine environmental conservation and the welfare of Indian Coast Guard veterans.
A major thrust of the interaction was the safety of fishing communities, who remain among the most vulnerable stakeholders during maritime emergencies and severe weather conditions.
Life-saving technology for fishing fleet
Sivamani underscored the critical importance of equipping fishing vessels with Distress Alert Transmitters (DATs) and mandatory lifesaving equipment to enhance the chances of survival during emergencies at sea.
The Coast Guard chief also briefed the Chief Minister on successful SAR operations in which numerous lives, including those of Tamil Nadu fishermen, were saved.
The ICG highlighted its proactive response during recent cyclonic weather events, when its interventions helped ensure zero fatalities, besides providing assistance to the State administration in the aftermath of natural calamities.
The emphasis on DATs assumes particular significance for Tamil Nadu, whose extensive coastline supports a large fishing community and a substantial maritime economy.
Coast Guard, state agencies to tighten maritime shield
The meeting also reaffirmed the commitment of the ICG and the Tamil Nadu Government to maintaining a robust coastal security architecture through seamless coordination among the Coast Guard, Tamil Nadu Police, Marine Police, Fisheries Department and other State stakeholders.
The DG reiterated the ICG’s commitment to maintaining an “unyielding coastal security posture”, with inter-agency coordination positioned as a key element in detecting and deterring illicit maritime activities.
The discussions also covered strengthening maritime safety mechanisms and ensuring that the fishing community receives timely assistance during emergencies.
From rescue at sea to relief on shore
The Coast Guard’s role, the ICG said, extends beyond maritime surveillance and rescue operations.
Its personnel have also been supporting State authorities during natural calamities, combining offshore rescue capabilities with assistance to civil administration during emergencies.
The interaction consequently placed preparedness, rapid response and inter-agency coordination at the heart of Tamil Nadu’s maritime safety strategy.
Environment, veterans also on the agenda
Marine environmental conservation and the welfare of Indian Coast Guard veterans also figured in the deliberations, broadening the agenda beyond immediate security concerns.
The discussions reflected the increasingly multi-dimensional role of the Coast Guard—from protecting India’s maritime frontiers and preventing illicit activities to safeguarding fishermen, responding to disasters and contributing to the preservation of the marine environment.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the mutual commitment of the Indian Coast Guard and Tamil Nadu Government to strengthen protection of the fishing community while further fortifying the region’s maritime security architecture.
