From the screen’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ — the leader of the people — to posters proclaiming him the nation’s next Prime Minister, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is fast acquiring a political avatar that his Congress ally is finding increasingly difficult to ignore.

What began as exuberant praise from sections of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has now spilled onto the streets, social media and even the emerging national political conversation, opening an unexpected faultline within the newly forged TVK-Congress alliance.
The immediate trigger is a campaign by sections of TVK supporters portraying Vijay as a future Prime Minister, with posters reportedly appearing in Thoothukudi proclaiming him “Today’s Chief Minister, tomorrow’s Prime Minister.” Promotional reels projecting Vijay as a national leader have also circulated beyond Tamil Nadu.
The development has reportedly unsettled Congress, which has been seeking to position Rahul Gandhi as its national face while simultaneously leveraging Vijay’s enormous popularity in Tamil Nadu and the southern political landscape.
The ‘Jana Nayagan’ paradox
The political symbolism is difficult to miss.
Vijay’s final film, Jana Nayagan, literally evokes the idea of a people’s leader, and its political imagery had already generated considerable discussion even before his electoral transition. The film’s posters and promotional material deliberately drew upon Vijay’s mass following and, in places, invoked the political-cultural legacy of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M G Ramachandran.
Now, with Vijay actually occupying the Chief Minister’s chair, the phrase appears to have acquired a second life in political messaging.
The difference is that the latest campaign is no longer confined to cinema or fan culture.
It is about who could eventually lead India.
And that is where Congress appears to be drawing the line.
The survey that gave the campaign oxygen
The debate gained fresh momentum after an India Today Mood of the Nation survey placed Vijay third among preferred Prime Ministerial choices.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led with 49%, Rahul Gandhi followed with 27%, while Vijay polled 9%, according to the survey report. The finding was followed by posters in Thoothukudi projecting Vijay as the next Prime Minister and renewed calls from sections of the TVK leadership for a leader from the South to occupy the country’s top political office
For TVK supporters, the number was enough to claim that Vijay’s appeal had already crossed Tamil Nadu’s borders.
For Congress, however, the same number appears to have raised an altogether different question:
How long can an alliance accommodate two competing national leadership narratives?
Congress: ‘Rahul Gandhi is our choice’
Congress has responded by drawing attention to the distinction between political popularity and parliamentary arithmetic.
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram pointed out that becoming Prime Minister requires the support of at least 272 MPs, effectively cautioning against treating a popularity survey as a realistic roadmap to the Prime Minister’s Office.
Tamil Nadu Congress leaders have been even more explicit.
Congress MP S Jothimani described the Vijay-for-PM projection as an “election strategy”, while insisting that Rahul Gandhi possesses the political strength to confront and defeat the Narendra Modi-led government.
In a recent statement, she went further, saying: “2029-ல் நிச்சயமாக ராகுல் காந்திதான் பிரதமராக வருவார்” — Rahul Gandhi will definitely become Prime Minister in 2029. She also dismissed the survey as “கருத்து திணிப்பு” — an imposed opinion — rather than a genuine opinion poll.
Tamil Nadu Minister P Viswanathan also sought to remove ambiguity, saying:
“As Congress leaders, we are very clear. Our beloved leader and leader of the opposition, Rahul Gandhi, is the INDIA bloc’s prime ministerial candidate for 2029.”
That statement leaves little room for a parallel Prime Ministerial narrative within Congress.
‘Fan club mode’ jibe adds political heat
The friction had already surfaced earlier when Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president B Manickam Tagore criticised what he described as the continuing “fan mentality” among TVK ministers and functionaries.
Tagore also made the political arithmetic bluntly clear in another context, saying TVK would need its own MPs before seeking a place in the INDIA bloc.
The remarks assume added significance because the Vijay-for-PM campaign is not merely coming from anonymous social-media accounts.
Senior TVK figures have publicly enlarged Vijay’s national stature.
K A Sengottaiyan has claimed that people in northern India are also looking towards Vijay, while other TVK leaders have spoken of him as a potential national leader. TVK voices have also argued that the Prime Minister should emerge from South India, particularly Tamil Nadu.
Nirmal Kumar: ‘No need to discuss this now’
The TVK leadership, meanwhile, has avoided converting the enthusiasm into an immediate formal political resolution.
Asked about the controversy in Madurai on Saturday, Minister Nirmal Kumar said people across India had aspirations for Vijay and indicated that the Chief Minister would take decisions according to the prevailing political situation.
His concluding message was significant: “There is no need to discuss this now.”
That carefully calibrated response could be read as an attempt to prevent supporter enthusiasm from becoming an immediate alliance confrontation.
The real test: Who owns the national narrative?
The emerging dispute is therefore less about whether Vijay can theoretically aspire to become Prime Minister and more about when and how that aspiration should be articulated.
Congress has strategic reasons to be cautious.
The party walked away from its earlier political association with the DMK and joined hands with TVK after the latter’s electoral breakthrough. Congress now wants to convert Vijay’s popularity into electoral gains while retaining Rahul Gandhi’s national positioning.
TVK, on the other hand, has every incentive to transform Vijay from a hugely popular Tamil Nadu leader into a national political brand.
That creates an inherent tension.
Congress wants Vijay’s popularity to strengthen Rahul Gandhi’s national campaign. TVK’s grassroots campaign increasingly appears to want Vijay’s popularity to become Vijay’s national campaign.
That is the faultline.
From fan power to parliamentary power
There is also a larger political calculation at work.
Vijay’s transition from cinema to politics has been unusually compressed. His final film, Jana Nayagan, was marketed amid intense speculation about his political future and eventually became a symbolic bridge between his screen persona and political identity. The film itself carried overt democratic and political motifs, reinforcing the larger narrative surrounding his transformation from actor to political leader.
The latest “Vijay for PM” campaign takes that transformation one step further.
But national politics ultimately runs not merely on fan clubs, viral reels or popularity percentages, but on votes, MPs, alliances, organisational reach, parliamentary numbers and ideological compatibility.
For the moment, Vijay has the first ingredient in abundance — mass appeal.
The question is whether TVK can convert that appeal into a national political architecture without unsettling the very alliance that helped bring it to power in Tamil Nadu.
The 2029 question starts early
The immediate controversy may eventually subside. TVK can describe the posters as the exuberance of supporters; Congress can dismiss them as premature political fantasy.
But the genie may already be out of the bottle.
The Jana Nayagan phenomenon has moved from cinema screens to Chief Ministerial politics — and now towards the national stage.
For Congress, the challenge is to prevent Vijay’s popularity from becoming a competing national leadership claim.
For TVK, the challenge is different: to determine whether it wants Vijay to remain primarily Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister with national influence, or begin building him as a Prime Ministerial contender for 2029.
And for Vijay himself, the most consequential political choice may be whether to allow the “Jana Nayagan” of the posters to become the “Jananayagan” of national politics.
The posters may be premature. The political question they have raised is not.
