CHENNAI, SEPT 4

Before an officer leads from the front, the warrior within must first be tested. That transformation was on spectacular display at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, where graduating officer cadets demonstrated a compelling combination of physical endurance, martial skill, equestrian mastery, traditional combat techniques and battlefield aggression during a Multi-Activity Display on Friday.

Held as a prelude to the Passing Out Parade, the event offered a glimpse into the demanding training that turns young men and women into commissioned officers entrusted with the responsibility of leading soldiers in some of the most challenging circumstances.

Lieutenant General Michael AJ Fernandez, Commandant, OTA Chennai, was the Chief Guest.

The display featured Physical Training Skills, Army Martial Art Regime (AMAR), Equestrian Display, Kalaripayattu and Bunker Bursting Drill, with the cadets showcasing the confidence, coordination and courage expected of future Army leaders.

Where fitness becomes a form of combat readiness

The proceedings opened with an invigorating exhibition of physical training prowess, underscoring the Academy’s uncompromising emphasis on fitness.

For an Army officer, physical fitness is not merely about strength or stamina. It is the foundation for operating under pressure, enduring adversity and leading soldiers when physical and mental demands are at their highest.

The cadets’ synchronised movements, agility and precision reflected the discipline built through relentless training.

The tempo rose further with the Army Martial Art Regime, showcasing the cadets’ proficiency in unarmed combat.

The display demonstrated how speed, balance, reflexes and controlled aggression are converted into combat skills through systematic military training.

Horsepower meets human courage

The Equestrian Display brought an entirely different dimension to the spectacle.

Officer Cadets and Riding Instructors demonstrated remarkable coordination with their horses, combining precision, agility, balance and daring in a performance that captivated the audience.

Beyond the visual spectacle, equestrian training demands an unusual combination of confidence and control. The rider must command without losing harmony with the animal—an attribute that resonates strongly with the larger ethos of military leadership.

The display was a striking reminder that some of the finest traditions of military training continue to find relevance even in an age dominated by technology.

Kalaripayattu: Where heritage meets warriorhood

The Academy then transported the audience from contemporary military training into India’s ancient martial heritage with a vibrant presentation of Kalaripayattu.

Blending martial movements, music, rhythm, physical dexterity and agility, the traditional combat form produced a spellbinding spectacle.

Its inclusion in the training display symbolised the continuity between India’s rich martial traditions and the modern soldier’s quest for physical and mental mastery.

Tradition was not presented as nostalgia—but as a living source of discipline, agility and warrior spirit.

When training simulates the battlefield

The event reached its most intense phase with the Bunker Bursting Drill, in which the cadets demonstrated ferocity, coordination and combat proficiency.

The drill brought home the fundamental purpose behind the arduous training at OTA: to prepare future officers to confront danger rather than merely witness it.

The confidence displayed by the cadets reflected their readiness to assume command and shoulder the responsibilities that await them in Army units across the country.

The journey from training ground to battlefield leadership is not measured only in physical strength. It is forged through discipline, teamwork, courage, split-second decision-making and an unwavering commitment to the men and women an officer will lead.

Commandant salutes the spirit of the graduating batch

Lieutenant General Michael AJ Fernandez felicitated the participants and lauded the exemplary skills displayed during the event.

The appreciation from the Commandant came as the cadets stood on the threshold of a defining moment in their lives—their Passing Out Parade on Saturday, following which they will join various units of the Indian Army.

The Multi-Activity Display was therefore more than a ceremonial prelude.

It was a public demonstration of a private transformation—of young cadets who entered the Academy to learn the craft of military leadership and now stand ready to accept the responsibilities of command.

As the equestrian teams displayed fearless balance, martial-art practitioners demonstrated controlled aggression and the bunker-bursting drill echoed the intensity of battle, one message rang unmistakably clear:

The uniform may confer authority, but it is training that earns the right to lead.
