At a time when credible public communication is becoming increasingly central to connecting government initiatives with citizens, J Kamaraj has assumed charge of a key communications mandate covering Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Kamaraj assumed charge on Friday as Additional Director General of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andaman & Nicobar Islands Region, under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India.

He will also hold charge as Additional Press Registrar General (ADPRG) for the region.
The assignment brings together three important dimensions of government communication—information dissemination, public outreach and press registration—under his leadership.
A journey across India’s public broadcasting ecosystem
An officer of the 2008 batch of the Indian Information Service (IIS), Kamaraj began his professional journey after initially being selected for the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS), where he served for about two years.
He subsequently joined the Indian Information Service and took up his first assignment as Assistant Director in the News Services Division of Akashvani, New Delhi, in 2011.
In 2013, he moved to DD News, New Delhi, as Assistant Director, gaining experience in television news and public broadcasting.
From Podhigai to regional outreach
Kamaraj later headed the Regional News Unit of DD Tamil (Podhigai) from 2016 to 2018, before returning to the News Services Division of Akashvani, New Delhi, as Joint Director in 2018.
His subsequent assignments expanded his exposure to regional communication and outreach.
In 2020, he assumed charge as Joint Director at the Regional Outreach Bureau, Chennai, now known as the Central Bureau of Communication. He served as its Director from 2021 onwards, except for a brief assignment as Director of the Regional News Unit, Akashvani Chennai, during 2024–25.
His career thus reflects a progression across radio, television, news services, regional broadcasting and government outreach, bringing together diverse strands of India’s public communication architecture.
A wider communication mandate
The new assignment places Kamaraj at the intersection of government information, media relations, public outreach and regional communication, with a geographically significant region under his charge.
Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands encompass vastly different linguistic, geographical and socio-economic landscapes, making effective communication both a challenge and an opportunity.
His experience across national and regional platforms is expected to bring a broad-based perspective to the dissemination of information and outreach activities across the region.
