When piety and gaiety compete for the same stage, Ahmedabad’s Kalibari Durga Puja is preparing to make its 89th edition a celebration where tradition does not merely survive—it reinvents itself.

The Bengal Cultural Association (BCA), Ahmedabad, on Sunday unveiled plans for its 89th Kalibari Durga Puja, promising an expansive celebration that will marry the spiritual grandeur of Maa Durga with architecture, art, music, craftsmanship and the unmistakable festive energy of Bengal.

The seven-day celebration will be held from October 15 to 21, 2026, at BCA’s new venue on Sindhu Bhavan Road, next to Monte Carlo Oxygen Park, with the centrepiece of this year’s presentation being an ISKCON Temple, Mayapur-inspired theme.

At a curtain-raiser media briefing, BCA Honorary General Secretary Anal Mukherjee and Vice President Soumen Mukherjee outlined the association’s vision of taking the historic celebration into a new chapter while retaining its traditional soul.

89 years—and a new beginning

What began nearly nine decades ago as a modest community celebration has evolved into an important fixture on Ahmedabad’s cultural calendar.

Over the decades, Kalibari Durga Puja has moved through different venues and generations, but the essence has remained unchanged—faith in Maa Durga, pride in Bengali heritage and an ever-growing bond with Ahmedabad.

BCA honorary general secretary Anal Mukherjee said the 89th edition represents both a celebration of this remarkable legacy and a new beginning at the Sindhu Bhavan Road venue.

The new location, he said, offers the association a fresh canvas to present the Puja on a larger scale while preserving the traditions that have sustained it for generations.

Mayapur comes to Ahmedabad

The star attraction this year will be the Mayapur-inspired theme, bringing together the grandeur of temple architecture, spiritual ambience and artistic imagination.

BCA vice president Soumen Mukherjee said the concept has been conceived to provide visitors with an experience that goes beyond conventional Puja decoration.

The theme is intended to create an immersive environment in which spirituality, architecture, creativity and festive celebration converge, offering devotees and visitors something to admire as well as something to experience.

A cultural bridge from Bengal to Gujarat

For BCA, however, the celebration is much larger than a Bengali community festival.

The association sees Kalibari Durga Puja as a living cultural bridge between Bengal and Gujarat—between Maa Durga and Maa Ambe, between two traditions of devotion and between communities that have increasingly shared one another’s festivals, food, music and cultural expressions.

The organisers see this relationship as a bridge of faith, friendship, culture and community, linking Ahmedabad’s diverse cultural landscape with Bengal’s rich festive traditions.

And this year, BCA intends to make that bridge even wider.

From idol-making to Crafts Mela

The festivities will feature a special Crafts Mela, giving artisans and artists an opportunity to showcase traditional craftsmanship, handicrafts and creative works.

Visitors will also get a closer look at the making of the Maa Durga idol, with BCA planning interactions with the idol maker to showcase the craftsmanship and painstaking preparation behind the divine form that eventually becomes the centrepiece of the Puja.

The association will also spotlight the artists, performers, sponsors, donors, committee members and volunteers who collectively make the celebration possible.

A Puja for every Ahmedabad family

Evening programmes will feature music, dance, special artist performances and cultural presentations, adding a lively dimension to the devotional celebrations.

BCA is particularly inviting non-Bengali families, youngsters, visitors and cultural enthusiasts to experience the traditions and emotions of Bengali Durga Puja.

The association’s invitation is encapsulated in its message:

“Come, Experience the Pride of Bengali Culture.”

The celebration, BCA maintains, is not only about religion. It is also about art, culture, music, creativity, food, friendship, togetherness and community spirit.

The people behind the Puja

Behind the grandeur will be months of planning and teamwork involving committee members and volunteers.

BCA plans to introduce these behind-the-scenes custodians through a special campaign highlighting their responsibilities, experiences, memories and personal connections with Kalibari Puja.

The association will similarly showcase its sponsors and donors through dedicated media and social-media initiatives, while inviting more corporates, businesses and well-wishers to join the historic 89th edition.

As Maa Durga prepares to descend once again, Ahmedabad’s Kalibari Puja is therefore looking beyond a grand celebration.

It is opening its doors wider—to tradition and innovation, devotion and creativity, Bengal and Gujarat, and above all, to an entire city coming together in celebration.
