With railway networks expanding across conventional and metro systems, V. Venkatasubramanian, a 1993-batch officer of the Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE), has taken charge as Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Southern Circle, Bengaluru, bringing extensive experience in railway operations, electrical systems and infrastructure to a position at the frontline of passenger safety and regulatory oversight.
Venkatasubramanian assumed charge in September 2026. As CRS, Southern Circle, he will oversee the safety jurisdiction covering Southern Railway, South Western Railway, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited, Chennai Metro Rail Limited and Kochi Metro Rail Limited.

An Electrical Engineering officer with extensive experience across the railway system, Venkatasubramanian has served in Chennai, Salem and Palakkad Divisions of Southern Railway and Bengaluru Division of South Western Railway during his career.
His professional experience includes key responsibilities in electric locomotive maintenance and operations, besides his association with the construction and maintenance of traction distribution systems—areas central to the safe and efficient functioning of an increasingly electrified railway network.
From Railway Board to the safety command
Before taking charge as Commissioner of Railway Safety, Venkatasubramanian was serving as Executive Director in the Railway Board, where he was responsible for electric and diesel locomotives and crew.
The new assignment brings together his field experience in railway electrical engineering and operations with a statutory safety role involving both conventional railways and metro systems within the Southern Circle.
The CRS: where safety meets expansion
The Commissioner of Railway Safety has a critical role in ensuring that new and modified railway infrastructure is brought into operation only after prescribed safety requirements are examined.
Among the key functions of the CRS are:
- Authorisation for opening new Railway/Metro lines.
- Investigation into serious railway accidents.
- Sanction for execution of minor works related to modifications.
- Condonation of infringements to the Schedule of Dimensions and sanction for movement of Over Dimensional Consignments (ODC) on Indian Railways.
- Periodical inspection of running lines and other Railway/Metro assets.
A mandate spanning railways and metros
Venkatasubramanian’s jurisdiction assumes added significance with the Southern Circle covering a diverse network comprising major railway operations as well as rapidly expanding metro infrastructure.
His experience across operating divisions, electric locomotive maintenance, traction systems and Railway Board-level responsibilities provides a broad operational background for the new assignment.
As Southern India’s railway and metro networks continue to expand and modernise, the CRS office will remain central to ensuring that speed, scale and technological advancement stay firmly on the right track of safety.
