What happens when a child stops reading about the weather and starts measuring it? Curiosity takes over. A rain gauge can trigger a question about rainfall; a wind vane can lead to another about changing wind direction; and an anemometer can turn an ordinary breeze into a scientific investigation.
That is the thinking behind a hands-on climate education initiative launched by the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar’s Centre for Creative Learning (CCL) in collaboration with the Government of Gujarat, taking environmental learning beyond textbooks and into the neighbourhoods of schoolchildren.
Designed for students of Grades 6 to 8, the programme is already under way in municipal schools across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat and Aravalli district, with an ambitious target of reaching 1,000 schools.
Aligned with Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), the national movement encouraging individuals and communities to adopt lifestyles that reduce their impact on the environment, the initiative seeks to make sustainability something children experience, question and practise, rather than merely study.
When curiosity becomes the classroom
The approach marks a conscious departure from traditional environmental science lessons.
Instead of asking children simply to memorise facts about climate and sustainability, CCL has built the programme around experiential learning—students do, observe, measure, analyse and create.
Participating schools connect with IIT Gandhinagar online twice a month, bringing the expertise of the institute directly into classrooms.
During the first two sessions, students built their own rain gauges, wind vanes and anemometers, which they are now using to measure and monitor rainfall and wind patterns in their neighbourhoods.
The instruments effectively turn classrooms into miniature weather stations, allowing students to collect and analyse live data from their immediate surroundings rather than relying solely on theoretical information in textbooks.
And that is where curiosity enters the equation.
When children see their own measurements changing from day to day, science becomes a question waiting to be answered: Why did it rain more today? Why did the wind change direction? Why is the reading different from another neighbourhood?
From observers to young scientists
The programme aims to encourage precisely this kind of questioning.
The ambition is to help young people reconnect with nature, develop sustainable habits and make environmental science fun and relatable through engaging, hands-on experiences on a large scale.
The specially developed kits will take this learning further in upcoming sessions.
Students will identify common items that pollute, explore eco-friendly alternatives and design and produce sustainable products using local materials.
Thus, the learning journey moves from observation to action—from identifying an environmental problem to understanding alternatives and eventually creating sustainable solutions.
From school to society
The larger objective is to embed climate and environmental literacy into the everyday practices of thousands of children and encourage them to carry those lessons beyond the classroom.
By reaching municipal schools in four districts and connecting classrooms directly with IIT Gandhinagar, the initiative creates a bridge between academic expertise, school education and community-level environmental action.
Its potential impact goes beyond the number of schools or students reached.
A child who learns to measure rainfall may begin noticing changing weather patterns. A student who investigates pollution may question an everyday consumption habit. A youngster who creates a sustainable product from local material may discover that environmental solutions can begin with imagination.
In that sense, the programme is attempting something more profound than teaching climate science.
It is nurturing curiosity—the first spark of scientific thinking—and allowing that curiosity to grow into environmental responsibility.
The most powerful climate lesson, therefore, may not come from a textbook at all.
It could begin with a child stepping outside, looking at the sky and asking: “Why?”
