AHMEDABAD, SEPT 18
A legacy that went beyond the cup.
Some legacies are measured in the reach of a brand; others in the values that endure long after its founder’s work is done. For Piyushbhai Desai, the journey through India’s tea industry was as much about nurturing relationships and serving society as it was about building a business. His passing on September 15, 2026, marks the end of an era for the Wagh Bakri Tea Group and the wider tea fraternity.
Chairman of the Wagh Bakri Tea Group, Desai was one of the Indian tea industry’s respected veterans, with more than six decades of association with the trade. His contribution helped shape the group’s growth from its Gujarat roots into a widely recognised name among tea lovers in India and overseas.
A respected tea taster, connoisseur and industry leader, Desai played a significant role in expanding the group’s presence across multiple states. His approach to business was anchored in quality, integrity, enduring relationships and the belief that progress was best achieved collectively.
For him, business carried a responsibility that extended beyond commercial success. His vision embraced the holistic development of the tea ecosystem, with growers, producers, workers, traders, employees and consumers all sharing in its progress.
Building institutions, strengthening the fraternity
Desai’s contribution to the tea trade extended well beyond the Wagh Bakri business. A founding member of the Gujarat Tea Traders Association (GTTA), Western India Tea Dealers Association (WITDA) and Federation of All India Tea Traders Associations (FAITTA), he worked towards strengthening the industry’s collective voice.
As the first president of GTTA, he played an important role in bringing together Gujarat’s tea fraternity and fostering cooperation within the trade.
His expertise and longstanding contribution received further recognition earlier this year, when the Northeastern Tea Association honoured him with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
The honour acknowledged a career shaped by deep knowledge of tea, commitment to the industry and sustained engagement with its development.
Gandhian values and a commitment to society
Beyond the business world, Desai’s life was guided by a strong sense of social responsibility and a deep influence of Gandhian philosophy.
He worked closely with Gujarat Vidyapith and contributed to its activities during the chancellorship of Naranbhai Desai, son of Mahadevbhai Desai, who served as Mahatma Gandhi’s personal assistant.
His association with institutions dedicated to public welfare also included serving as president of the Blind People’s Association (India) for approximately two years. He was a trustee of Sadvichar Parivar, where he actively contributed to its initiatives and activities.
These engagements reflected a cherished value deeply rooted in the Desai family’s ethos and passed down through generations: “Giving Back to Society.”
For Desai, this commitment found expression in supporting education, community welfare, service and initiatives aimed at improving lives. His contributions to these institutions formed an important part of a legacy that cannot be measured in business milestones alone.
A mentor who passed on more than a business
Desai remained actively involved in the group’s affairs for several decades and was closely associated with the business until 2020.
In addition to his leadership, he played the role of a mentor, guiding the next generation and passing on the principles that had shaped his own journey.
The foundation he established and the values he instilled became an important bedrock for the next generation. Under its leadership, the Wagh Bakri Tea Group has expanded significantly, evolving into a household name among tea lovers across India and reaching more than 66 countries worldwide.
The group’s growth stands as a testament to the enduring strength of the foundations he helped build and the continuity of the values he championed.
An enduring legacy of excellence and compassion
For an industry that knew him as both a tea maestro and an institution-builder, Desai’s passing marks the end of a significant chapter.
His legacy lives on in the business he helped shape, the trade organisations he helped establish, the institutions he served and the people he mentored along the way.
More enduring still is the example of a life that brought together business excellence and social commitment — one that recognised growth not merely as an achievement for an enterprise, but as an opportunity for others to progress alongside it.
As the tea fraternity remembers Piyushbhai Desai, the values of quality, integrity, collective growth and service to society remain an enduring tribute to a life devoted to building a legacy beyond business.
