  • Everyday utility: Credit-card reward points could soon be redeemed through Digital Rupee, extending the sovereign digital currency into consumer spending.
  • Corporate transformation: A self-service portal will enable businesses to distribute purpose-bound employee allowances and reimbursements.
  • Seamless payments: BHIM integration aims to widen merchant access, while offline CBDC payments could bring digital transactions onboard flights.
  • RBI partnership: HDFC Bank highlights programmability, transparency and compliance as it works towards scalable CBDC applications.

NE BANKING BUREAU

AHMEDABAD, SEPT 23

Can the Digital Rupee move from the wallet to everyday life — and even take off mid-air?

From redeeming credit-card reward points to paying for refreshments on a flight without an internet connection, HDFC Bank is exploring how India’s sovereign digital currency can become part of everyday transactions. Its showcase of five innovations signals an effort to take the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) beyond digital wallets and into consumer rewards, corporate reimbursements, merchant payments and offline transactions.

Unveiled last week at an industry forum, the initiatives demonstrate how the Digital Rupee could serve both individuals and businesses through practical applications, with programmability, regulatory compliance and wider accessibility at the centre of its proposed expansion.

Five innovations, one digital currency

  1. Credit-card rewards meet the Digital Rupee

HDFC Bank is exploring a facility that will allow customers to redeem credit-card reward points against Digital Rupee, much like brand-specific reward vouchers.

Customers will be able to use their rewards across categories such as dining, fuel, apparel and electronics, with redemption possible down to the last paise. The initiative is intended to provide greater flexibility and transparency in how customers use their accumulated benefits.

  1. Promotional gift vouchers straight to the wallet

The Bank’s customer promotions will feature Digital Rupee gift vouchers that can be automatically triggered when customers fulfil qualifying conditions.

Once activated, the vouchers will be credited directly to the customer’s HDFC Bank Digital Rupee wallet. They can then be spent by scanning UPI QR codes across merchant categories, giving customers greater choice in using promotional benefits.

  1. Corporate portal for purpose-bound employee payments

Organisations will soon be able to disburse employee allowances and reimbursements through a self-service Digital Rupee facility on HDFC Bank’s Corporate Net-banking platform.

The proposed portal will support meal, fuel and travel allowances, with programmable payouts designed to ensure that funds are used only for their intended purposes.

The facility is expected to strengthen compliance and reduce reconciliation efforts for corporate finance teams, while simplifying the administration of employee benefits.

  1. BHIM integration to widen merchant access

HDFC Bank Digital Rupee wallets will become available on BHIM, enabling customers to make familiar, UPI-style payments directly from their CBDC wallets.

The integration is expected to improve discoverability and expand opportunities for merchant acceptance, bringing the Digital Rupee closer to routine retail transactions.

  1. Offline CBDC payments take flight

Taking digital payments beyond conventional internet connectivity, HDFC Bank is preparing an in-flight payment facility that will allow customers to tap their phones on the Bank’s point-of-sale (POS) devices onboard aircraft.

The proposed service will enable payments for food, beverages and seat upgrades even without an internet connection, opening up another potential use case for offline CBDC transactions.

‘Sovereign money with programmability’

“Digital Rupee combines the trust of sovereign money with programmability, transparency and stronger controls,” said Ashish Parthasarathy, Group Head, Branch Banking, Payments, Treasury, Liability Products, Marketing, Virtual Channels and Infrastructure, HDFC Bank.

“These use cases address emerging needs around purpose-bound payments, compliance and auditability across retail and wholesale markets. We remain committed to working with RBI to turn CBDC’s potential into responsible, scalable solutions,” he added.

Rajanish Prabhu, Senior EVP, HDFC Bank, said the next phase of Digital Rupee adoption would be driven by scale and everyday utility.

“The next phase of Digital Rupee adoption will be driven by scale and everyday utility. By bringing CBDC into familiar journeys — UPI, merchant acceptance, rewards, employee benefits and offline payments — we are making it easier for customers and businesses to use the Digital Rupee in daily life, while opening up new possibilities for programmable payments,” he said.

From digital payments to programmable money

The five initiatives reflect HDFC Bank’s effort to embed the Digital Rupee in high-frequency consumer and corporate transactions, ranging from promotional rewards and merchant purchases to automated business disbursements and offline payments.

While UPI facilitates account-based digital payments, CBDC offers additional possibilities through programmability, purpose-bound transactions and enhanced controls. These features could help address specific corporate payment and compliance requirements alongside familiar retail payment experiences.

The broader ambition is to make the Digital Rupee accessible and useful across everyday financial interactions, while working with the Reserve Bank of India to develop responsible and scalable applications.
