GANDHINAGAR, OCT 17
Can India’s centuries-old craft traditions find fresh expression in a rapidly changing world without losing the soul of their heritage? CHHAAP@Sabarmati 2026, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Gandhinagar’s celebration of India’s living creative legacy, seeks to explore precisely that intersection—bringing artisans, designers, students, alumni and the public together in a vibrant showcase of craftsmanship, culture and contemporary design.
Set against the iconic Sabarmati Riverfront and the landmark Atal Bridge, the event will feature more than 100 stalls by artisans and NIFT alumni, alongside craft exhibitions, live demonstrations, hands-on workshops, masterclasses, panel discussions, craft conversations, cultural performances and technology-enabled experiences. The initiative aims to give traditional crafts greater visibility, encourage direct engagement between artisans and consumers, and open up new avenues for innovation, entrepreneurship and design-led development.
The theme of this year’s celebration, “स्वर्णिम भारत – विरासत और विकास | Rooted in Heritage. Reimagined for Tomorrow,” captures the ambition to connect India’s rich cultural inheritance with its aspirations for the future.
Dr. Sameer Sood, Director, NIFT Gandhinagar, said the event would provide a platform to showcase India’s living craft traditions, support artisan communities and bridge traditional knowledge with contemporary design sensibilities. By bringing craftspeople and creative practitioners together, CHHAAP@Sabarmati will also encourage knowledge exchange, the transmission of traditional skills and the exploration of fresh possibilities for India’s handloom and handicraft sectors.

From Garba to Bhangra, a cultural celebration
The craft showcases and knowledge-sharing sessions will be complemented by a lively programme of evening performances celebrating India’s cultural diversity. Visitors can look forward to Gujarati Garba and Dandiya, Rajasthani Kalbelia, Rajasthani folk music, Punjabi Bhangra and Giddha, and a live performance by an Ahmedabad-based orchestra.
The performances will add a festive dimension to the celebration, bringing together regional music, dance and artistic expression in a setting that reflects India’s cultural plurality.
Crafting a bridge between heritage and Viksit Bharat
India’s traditional crafts and textiles are repositories of knowledge, ingenuity and cultural memory. Their significance extends beyond aesthetics: they sustain artisan livelihoods, preserve regional identities and carry forward techniques refined over generations.
CHHAAP@Sabarmati seeks to place these traditions in a contemporary context by highlighting the role of design, innovation and entrepreneurship in strengthening the handloom and handicraft sectors. Through exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops, discussions and immersive experiences, the event will encourage visitors to look beyond a finished product and understand the people, processes and cultural narratives behind it.
The larger challenge is to preserve traditional knowledge while enabling craft practices to evolve in response to new markets, technologies and consumer expectations. By bringing artisans and contemporary creative practitioners into closer contact, the initiative aims to foster fresh ideas without severing the connection with heritage.
Public and media invited
NIFT Gandhinagar has invited media organisations, craft enthusiasts, design professionals, students, families and members of the public to participate in the celebration.
