CHENNAI, OCTOBER 17
How do champions handle pressure, turn teamwork into triumph and create a legacy beyond the playing field? Madurai’s boys supplied a compelling answer with a third consecutive title, while Virudhunagar’s girls made history by winning the inaugural U-17 Girls’ Inter-Schools Hockey Tournament at the 4th MCC-Murugappa Tamil Nadu U-17 Schools Hockey Tournament 2026 at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Saturday.
- Madurai’s hat-trick: Indira Gandhi Memorial Matriculation Higher Secondary School defeat St. Paul’s 7-4 to retain their winning legacy.
- Girls make history: Virudhunagar’s Kshatriya Girls Higher Secondary School claim the inaugural U-17 title with a commanding 6-0 victory.
- Sport for all: Four district teams feature in the maiden girls’ competition, widening opportunities for schoolgirl hockey players.
- Teamwork beyond the turf: Murugappa Group and Madras Cricket Club underline discipline, trust and sporting spirit as foundations for success.
- Individual brilliance rewarded: Eight young players receive Hercules and BSA bicycles for outstanding performances.
- Goals for a greener future: The ‘Plant a Goal’ initiative translates 205 goals into a commitment to plant 4,100 saplings in Thoothukudi district.
Indira Gandhi Memorial Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai, produced a goal-laden performance to defeat St. Paul’s Higher Secondary School, Chennai, 7-4 in the boys’ final, completing a hat-trick of tournament titles.
The girls’ competition, introduced for the first time this year, delivered an equally emphatic statement. Kshatriya Girls Higher Secondary School, Virudhunagar, blanked St. Joseph’s Girls Higher Secondary School, Pudukkottai, 6-0 to emerge as the inaugural champions, giving the tournament a significant new dimension by opening its doors to young women hockey players.
Girls’ debut adds a new chapter

The introduction of the girls’ category marked a milestone for the tournament, with four teams representing Karnambut, Virudhunagar, Pudukkottai and Erode. Their participation expanded the platform for emerging talent and brought a new generation of schoolgirl hockey players into the spotlight.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, P. Prashanth, Business Unit Head, TI Cycles of India, Murugappa Group, highlighted the significance of the initiative.
“This year is especially significant as we welcome girls’ teams to the tournament for the very first time, with four teams representing different districts across Tamil Nadu. It is heartening to see the platform grow and create equal opportunities for young athletes to compete, learn and excel,” he said.
Drawing a parallel between sport and life, Prashanth added: “Hockey, like life, is a team game. It tests how you handle pressure, how you respond when things don’t go your way, and how you stand by a teammate when mistakes happen. Whether on the field or in the workplace, teamwork, discipline and trust make the difference. Play hard, stand together, fight for one another, and accept both victory and defeat with grace.”
Karthik Rajasekhar, President, Madras Cricket Club (MCC), emphasised the institution’s continued commitment to sport and the development of young talent.
“MCC, as we all know, has been at the forefront of supporting sport in Chennai, staying true to our motto that sport is a way of life. I would like to thank the Murugappa Group for its continued support of this tournament, and particularly for this initiative for school students, who are our future champions,” he said.
Congratulating the winners and runners-up, he also commended every participating team for its enthusiasm and sporting spirit.

Every goal plants a seed of change
Beyond the scores and trophies, the tournament also carried an environmental message. The Murugappa Group’s ‘Plant a Goal’ initiative, introduced last year as part of the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey Tournament, will continue to link sporting achievement with ecological responsibility.
Under the programme, 20 saplings will be planted for every goal scored. With 205 goals registered during the schools’ tournament, 4,100 saplings are set to be planted at Tharuvaikulam village in Thoothukudi district, with the support of local communities.
The initiative seeks to give every goal a lasting legacy beyond the hockey field, connecting the excitement of competition with a practical commitment to a greener environment.
Road to the Gold Cup
The boys’ tournament featured eight teams — four from Chennai and four from other parts of Tamil Nadu, representing Madurai, Hosur, Karnambut and Tirunelveli. League matches were played on October 14 and 15, followed by the semi-finals and finals on October 17.
The girls’ league matches took place on October 15 and 16, with the final held alongside the boys’ title clash on Saturday.
The spotlight now shifts to the 97th All-India MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey Tournament 2026, scheduled from October 22 to November 1. Ten teams will compete in the prestigious tournament, divided into two groups.
As Madurai celebrate another boys’ crown and Virudhunagar savour a historic first, the tournament has delivered a message extending beyond the final whistle: nurturing talent, widening access and building sporting character can be as important as winning the trophy.
