Can domestic industrial infrastructure reduce fertiliser manufacturers’ exposure to imported raw materials while strengthening India’s production resilience? Tata Projects’ latest engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals Limited (GSFC) seeks to advance that objective through an integrated acid manufacturing complex at Sikka in Gujarat’s Jamnagar district.
Tata Projects, a technology-led EPC company and a member of the Tata Group, has secured the significant contract to develop an integrated phosphoric acid–sulphuric acid complex, marking a strategic step in its expansion into specialised process industries.
The proposed facility will comprise a 600-metric-tonne-per-day (MTPD) phosphoric acid plant and a 1,800-MTPD sulphuric acid plant, along with associated utilities and offsite infrastructure.
The project forms part of GSFC’s strategic expansion and backward-integration programme. By strengthening captive raw-material availability for phosphatic fertiliser production, the complex is intended to reduce exposure to imported inputs and improve long-term operational resilience.
A strategic bet on specialised process industries
For Tata Projects, the contract strengthens its credentials in delivering technically demanding industrial facilities. The integrated nature of the complex will require coordination across engineering, procurement, construction planning and commissioning, with the performance of interconnected plant systems critical to successful delivery.
The company’s integrated EPC approach is expected to play a key role in managing these interfaces and coordinating the multiple disciplines involved in executing the project.
‘A compelling value proposition’
Rajiv Menon, President and Chief Growth & Strategy Officer, Tata Projects, said:
“Built on sustained engagement with GSFC, the award demonstrates our ability to compete for and secure complex industrial projects through differentiated solutions and a compelling value proposition. As we expand our presence in chemicals, fertilisers and other specialised process industries, our priority remains to build a high-quality, diversified order book anchored in technical expertise, execution credibility and enduring customer partnerships.”
Strengthening the fertiliser value chain
The project’s backward-integration focus is significant for the fertiliser sector, where reliable access to essential industrial inputs can influence supply-chain resilience and operational continuity.
By developing integrated acid production facilities, GSFC aims to strengthen its raw-material base for phosphatic fertiliser manufacturing. The project also highlights the role of domestic industrial investment in supporting the wider agricultural-input ecosystem.
Diversifying the industrial growth portfolio
The contract complements Tata Projects’ established capabilities across power, metals and mining, oil and gas, clean energy and advanced manufacturing.
Its expansion into chemicals and fertilisers is intended to deepen process-engineering expertise, diversify its industrial portfolio and create sustained value through technically differentiated EPC solutions.
As execution progresses, the project will test the company’s ability to coordinate complex industrial systems while supporting GSFC’s long-term manufacturing ambitions.
