From joining through WhatsApp to accessing emergency ambulance assistance, Uber is rolling out a new suite of driver-first innovations designed to make earning more flexible, safer and more rewarding for its 20 lakh-plus earners across India. Unveiled at the third edition of Uber Pragati, the initiatives combine flexible subscription options, simplified onboarding, enhanced safety technology and additional income opportunities, reflecting a broader push to improve the everyday experience of drivers on the platform.
- Greater flexibility: Subscription-based Drive Passes range from six hours to 180 days
- Simpler onboarding: Quickstart enables drivers to join Uber through WhatsApp
- Stronger safety: Ambulance assistance and encrypted ride recordings deliver real-world support
- New income streams: Bike Intercity, Uber Direct, Uber Parcel and Uber Pet expand earning opportunities
- Driver-centric upgrades: Voice Notes, a simplified app and flexible payment options aim to reduce working-day interruptions
The company also highlighted the real-world impact of its safety features, including ambulance assistance following accidents and encrypted in-app video recordings that have helped establish facts in disputed incidents.

Aditya Kapoor, Director – Supply Operations, Uber India & South Asia, said:
“Our ambition is to continue being the platform of choice for flexible earning opportunities in India. That means giving drivers the freedom to work on their own terms, the confidence of industry-leading safety protections and more ways to earn. We want to continue setting the benchmark for what drivers should expect from a platform.”
Easier: Flexibility with less hassle
Uber is introducing a range of features aimed at giving drivers greater control over their work schedules, simplifying routine processes and reducing interruptions.
Flexible Drive Pass: Described by Uber as an industry-first, the subscription-based offering gives drivers a choice of passes ranging from six hours to 180 days, catering to both part-time and full-time earning requirements.
Quickstart: In another initiative described as an industry-first in the ride-hailing space, drivers can join Uber through WhatsApp, making the onboarding process more convenient through a messaging application they already use.
Earn First, Pay Later: Unlike pay-first models, this facility allows eligible drivers to continue accepting cash trips even when their balance runs out, subject to an additional credit limit. The feature is intended to minimise interruptions and help drivers continue working.
Voice Notes and a simplified Driver App: Drivers can communicate with riders through voice notes in Uber’s in-app chat. A redesigned, simplified Driver App brings earnings, trip details and important updates together for easier access.
Safer: Technology that makes a difference
Uber is strengthening its safety ecosystem with emergency assistance, encrypted recordings and tools to address inappropriate communication.
Ambulance Assistance: Described by the company as an industry-first in ride-hailing, the facility is accessible through Uber’s 24×7 Safety Line in partnership with Dial 4242. The service has been used on 25 occasions in less than four months, helping riders and drivers obtain medical assistance following accidents.
Record My Ride: Uber’s encrypted video-recording feature is designed to provide an objective account of events during a trip. According to the company, a recording has already helped clarify a disputed incident involving a rider and a driver, assisting the police in establishing the facts.
Safety Content Flag: The company is introducing real-time chat safeguards that identify potentially inappropriate language and prompt riders to reconsider their messages before sending them. Drivers who receive inappropriate messages can cancel eligible trips without affecting their cancellation statistics.
The in-app Driver Safety Hub brings safety tools and support together in one place. It also allows drivers to keep selected protections, including audio recording and trip-sharing, enabled automatically.
More rewarding: Opening up new income streams
Uber is expanding earning opportunities beyond conventional ride bookings, particularly for bike drivers.
Bike Intercity enables drivers to undertake shorter trips between neighbouring towns and cities, with Delhi–Meerut cited as an example.
Uber Direct allows bike drivers to fulfil delivery orders for businesses, while Uber Parcel enables them to deliver personal packages within cities. Together, these services broaden the range of assignments available beyond passenger transport.
For participating car drivers, Uber Pet creates an additional earning opportunity by enabling them to accept riders travelling with their pets.
Uber’s Refer & Earn programme offers another avenue to earn rewards by referring new drivers to the platform.
A driver-first approach to platform growth
The latest initiatives span three priorities: making it easier for drivers to work on their own terms, strengthening their access to safety tools and widening the range of opportunities available to them.
By combining flexible subscription passes, streamlined onboarding, emergency assistance and additional service categories, Uber is seeking to make its platform more responsive to drivers’ everyday needs.
The impact of these measures will ultimately depend on their accessibility, the terms attached to individual features and the earning opportunities available in different cities. For India’s growing app-based mobility workforce, the emphasis on flexibility, safety and diversified income offers a useful indication of how ride-hailing platforms are evolving beyond conventional passenger trips.
