India’s indigenous defence technology programme has scored another significant milestone, with the successful flight-test of ‘Pralay’, the country’s quasi-ballistic missile, taking the advanced weapon system closer to induction into the armed forces. The DRDO-led trial not only met all its stated objectives but also underscored the growing role of domestic research laboratories and industry partners in developing strategic military capabilities.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the successful flight-test from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast at around 11.10 am on Wednesday. Data captured by multiple range instruments deployed by the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, confirmed that all test objectives had been fully met.
Indigenously developed by the Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad, in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories, Pralay represents a significant addition to India’s home-grown missile development capabilities. Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), one of the Development-cum-Production Partners, has manufactured the system.
The trial was conducted as part of user evaluation trials, in the presence of senior DRDO officials, representatives of the defence industry and the Defence Forces. With the successful completion of this test, the induction of the missile into the military has become imminent, according to the official statement.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Defence Forces and industry partners on the achievement. He stated that the missile, equipped with advanced technologies, would further enhance the technological capabilities and operational preparedness of the military against emerging threats.
Defence Secretary and Secretary, Department of Defence R&D, and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh also congratulated the teams involved in the successful flight-test.
The achievement highlights the importance of sustained collaboration between national research institutions, defence manufacturers and the armed forces in advancing India’s indigenous defence ecosystem. The successful user evaluation trial marks a decisive step towards translating home-grown missile technology into an operational military capability.
