Tamil Nadu touched a new high in respect of the number of persons infected with coronavirus with as many as 817 being tested positive over the past 24 hours, said the State Health Department on Wednesday.

The Department said six Covid-19 patients died, taking the death toll to 133. In a statement, 817 persons turned into Covid-19 patients in Tamil Nadu taking the total tally to 18,545.

According to the Department, out of the new infections, 139 are from other states (Maharashtra 138, Kerala 1).

A total of 567 Covid-19 patients were discharged from various hospitals in the state, taking the total tally to 9,909.

On Wednesday 11,231 samples were tested, taking the total to 4.42 lakh. Testing of 650 samples is under process.

The state capital Chennai with its high density of population continued to see the highest number of infections at 548 taking the total tally to 12,203.

The number of infected children in the age group 0-12 went up to 1,122. There are 8,500 active cases reported in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami is expected to hold a meeting with District Collectors on Friday, as the lockdown 4.0 ends on Sunday.
