NEW DELHI, JUNE 23
Jamia Millia Islamia student Safoora Zargar, who was arrested on April 10 on conspiracy charges in Northeast Delhi riots that broke out in February this year, was granted bail by Delhi High Court on “humanitarian grounds” today.
Safoora is five months pregnant. She was media coordinator of Jamia Coordination Committee(JCC), a body of current and former students, who had launched anti-CAA agitation outside the Jamia university premises.
While she was initially charged under various sections of Indian Penal Code and was granted bail but was not released as charges under stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) were also added by Delhi Police special Cell. She was accused of inciting people to resort to riots in Jafrabad.
However, the court directed her not to indulge in activities that may obstruct investigation. She has also been asked not to leave Delhi without court permission.
Safoora’s arrest was condemned by human rights activists from all over the globe.
Representing the Delhi police, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta did not oppose the bail but said that she could be granted a regular bail on humanitarian grounds but it should not be made a precedent in other cases.
