Secretary of the DMK youth wing Udhayanidhi Stalin and over 500 party cadres were detained after they staged a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, the CAB Bill that was passed in both Houses of the Parliament and subsequently Presidential nod was given.
Udhayanidhi Stalin led a protest at Saidapet, where the copies of CAB were torn by party men.
The arrested cadres were kept in a marriage hall, police sources said. The party men gathered in Saidapet and raised slogans against the Centre and State governments over the Act.
DMK MPs in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha had voted against the Bill. However, the Bill has been passed in both Houses eventually and became an Act after receiving the President’s assent late on Thursday night, a day after the bill was cleared in Rajya Sabha.
