Gujarat on Monday reported the highest single-day spike of 902 COVID-19 cases, taking the overall count in the state to 42,808 while fatalities mounted by 10, including five in Surat, to 2,057, the health department said.

A total of 608 patients were discharged in the day, taking the number of the recovered cases to 29,806.

The state now has 10,945 active cases, out of which the condition of 74 patients is critical, the department said in a release.

Surat reported the highest number of 287 cases and five deaths, followed by Ahmedabad with 164 cases and three fatalities. Gandhinagar and Morbi districts each reported one death.

In Surat, the new Covid-19 hotspot in the state, the case count is rising every day. The city accounted for nearly 32 percent of cases reported on Monday.

Surat now has 8,659 cases, the second-highest in the state after Ahmedabad which has so far reported 23,259 cases, it said.

The number of deaths in Ahmedabad and Surat now stands at 1,522 and 323, respectively.

From other parts of the state, Junagadh district reported 74 new cases, Bhavnagar 40, Rajkot 34, Amreli 29, Surendranagar 26, Gandhinagar 25, Kheda and Navsari 19 each, Dahod 16, Bharuch 15, Banaskantha 12, Mehsana 12, Patan 10, Anand nine, etc.

The number of recovered cases in Ahmedabad has reached 8,659 while it stands at 5,153 in Surat.

Ravi visits Jamnagar as cases touch 358

Gujarat Principal Health Secretary Jayanti Ravi on Monday visited Jamnagar, which has 358 COVID-19 cases so far and held discussions with local officials to contain the outbreak.

Ravi asked them to mark areas that have a high number of cases and also go in for intensive surveillance to identify suspected coronavirus cases, an official release said.

She held detailed discussions with Collector Ravi Shankar, Municipal Commissioner Satish Patel, and others, and also visited containment areas and interacted with patients.

Ravi said survey teams will be given oximeters to find out oxygen levels in the body during screening.

Talking to reporters, Ravi said the Gujarat Ayurveda University in Jamnagar will be roped in to conduct research to develop medicines that can counter the virus.

With cases are rising here, Ravi said government doctors from Jamnagar will not be sent to Ahmedabad.

A’bad count 23,259; death toll 1,522

The number of COVID-19 cases in Ahmedabad district of Gujarat mounted by 164 to 23,259 on Monday, the state health department said.

With three more patients succumbing to the infection, the death toll has risen to 1,522, it said.

Ahmedabad has been reporting less than 200 cases every day since July 3.

A total of 125 patients were discharged in the day, taking the number of the recovered cases in the district to 17,947.

152 of the 164 new cases were reported from the limits of the Ahmedabad municipal corporation and 12 cases from rural areas, the department said.

The number of COVID-19 cases from rural parts of the district rose by 12 to 978 in the day. Out of them, 815 patients have recovered from the infection, a release said.

Meanwhile, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has raised the amount of fine for not wearing face masks at public places from Rs 200 to Rs 500.

The number of micro-containment areas in the city now stands at 195, with the civic body adding 123 new areas on Monday and removing six others.

On Monday, the Covid-19 death toll rate of Ahmedabad came down to 74.23 percent from 81 percent. The state’s mortality rate is 4.80 percent. It has come down a bit but is still one of the highest in the country.

During the day, the health authorities conducted 5,619 RT-PCR tests, raising the number to 4,70,265. Of this, 4,27,457 people tested negative.

Surat records 287 cases; 186 discharged

Surat reported 287 new coronavirus cases on Monday, taking the tally in the district in Gujarat to 8,659, while five more patients succumbed to the infection, the state health department said.

The death toll in the district rose to 323 with five more COVID-19 fatalities, it said here.

Out of the 287 cases, 207 were reported from Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) limits (the city) and 80 from rural parts of the district, it said.

With 186 patients getting discharged on Monday, the total recovered cases in the district rose to 5,153, the department said.

In Surat city, the highest number of 40 cases were reported from Varachha ”A” zone followed by Katargam at 38.

Several diamond and textile units are located in these localities.

In a video message, municipal Commissioner B N Pani on Monday asked residential societies and industrial units to use oxymeter to measure oxygen saturation levels of people living and working under them, and refer cases with the level below 94 to hospitals with immediate effect.

He appealed to the people living in localities badly affected by coronavirus like Varachha, Katargam, Sarthana, Limbayat, Puna and Adajan, among others, to avoid coming out of their houses unless absolutely necessary and stay away from crowded places to curb the infection spread.

The civic body has so far surveyed 9,59,894 persons for coronavirus in the city, where 12,114 people are under home quarantine, the SMC said in a release.

In rural areas, 3,539 people are home quarantined, said a separate release from the Surat district panchayat.
