Citing the Maharashta Government waiving off farm loans up to Rs 2 lakh per farmer, the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Sunday said that according to Government of India figures, 43% of Gujarat’s farmers are in debt and hence they should also be given farm loan waiver. The Congress said that 39.31 lakh farmers in the state are reeling from debt.
GPCC president Amit Chavda and the leader of the opposition, Paresh Dhanani, said in a statement that while industries have been granted several concessions and sops worth more than Rs 6 lakh crore over the past 15 years, farmers’ loans have not been waived.
Citing the condition of farmers in the state, the Congress said that unseasonal rain left them with huge losses. The party said that insurance companies have collected premium worth several crores of rupees from farmers, but they are yet to give compensation.
The statement said that the Congress has implemented its election promise in several states by announcing waiver of farm loans.
