Chennai Railway Division of the Southern Railway has always been in the forefront in ensuring convergence with Southern Railway’s initiatives with the ambitious Swachht Bharat mission. Chennai Division observed a fortnight cleanliness drive, “ Swachchta Pakhwada” from 16th to 30th September 2020.

On the occasion of the Valedictory Celebrations of the Campaign and also commemorate the 151st birth anniversary, Chennai Railway Division has unveiled a an 80-feet wall mural of Mahatma Gandhi at Moore Market Complex (MMC) building which serves as the terminal for suburban trains for Arakkonam and Gummidipoondi sections.
The art work has been conceived as a part of the beautification of Chennai Central Railway Station Complex. This initiative is a fitting tribute to the father of the nation who re-defined the ideal of cleanliness and sanitation in the collective consciousness of the community.
Indian Railways shares a special bond with Mahatma Gandhi. Chennai Railway Division is mulling to exhibit one of the Gandhiji’s train travel as a wall mural, in collaboration with Renault Nissan Technology and Business Centre under CSR project, a mural of Mahatma Gandhi of 80 feet tall was cropped on the Eastern side wall of Moore Market Complex (MMC) building.
This mural painting was completed in just 8 days. A large crane was used in this process for painting at heights. The mural was unveiled on Friday.
This illustrative sketch of Mahatma disembarking from a train and being received by great leaders was originally drawn by Shri M. A. Sankaralingam, Retd. Artist, Southern Railway. This famed portrait has been prominently displayed at many important places throughout India. The mural painting is sure to grab the passengers eye-ball at the Station, said a release from A.
