COVID-19: After 4 months, Gujarat reports single-digit death

The recovery rate in rural Ahmedabad stands at 95 percent with a total of 2,402 patients getting discharged so far, including 22 on Sunday.

After 4 months, Gujarat reported single-digit death and a lower number of new coronavirus cases, the state health department said on Sunday.

Gujarat on Sunday recorded 1,302 new coronavirus cases, taking its tally to 1,42,700, while there were nine deaths – the first time in four months that fatality figures were in single figures – taking the toll to 3,499.

The state, which added 42,676 COVID cases in September with a daily average of 1,422 cases, has seen 5,306 new cases in October so far, at a daily average of 1,326 cases.

A total of 1,246 patients were discharged on Sunday, taking the total to 1,22,365, while there are presently 16,836 active cases, out of which 87 critical patients are on ventilator.

Of the new cases, hotspot Surat led with 283, followed by Ahmedabad with 191, Rajkot with 152, Vadodara with 133 and Jamnagar with 92.

Gandhinagar saw 60 cases, Mehsana 53, Junagadh 33, Bhavnagar 31, Amreli 27, Bharuch, Surendranagar, and Patan 22 each, Kutch 19, Panchmahals 18, Tapi 17, Morbi 14, Gir-Somnath and Kheda 12 each, Narmada 11, Dahod, Sabarkantha, and Banaskantha 10 each, Anand eight, Navsari seven, Chotta Udepur, Devbhumi Dwarka, and Mahisagar six each, Porbandar five, Aravalli and Botad four each and Valsad two.

Four deaths were reported from Surat, three from Ahmedabad and one each from Rajkot and Vadodara.

The total number of corona deaths in Ahmedabad have reached 1,825, while 784 have died in Surat, 191 in Vadodara, 144 in Rajkot, 78 in Gandhinagar, and 66 in Bhavnagar.

Health authorities have so far conducted 46,45,263 RT-PCR tests.

Ahmedabad reports 191 new cases taking tally to 37,623

The COVID-19 death toll in Ahmedabad district rose to 1,841 on Sunday with three more fatalities, while 191 fresh cases took the tally in the district to 37,623, the state health department said.

A total of 272 patients were discharged from hospitals during the day, taking the recovery count in the district to 31,879, the department said in its release.

The number of recoveries exceeded new cases in both Ahmedabad city and the rural parts of the district.

While the city reported 172 new cases and 250 recoveries, the rural parts reported 19 cases and 22 recoveries, it added.

All three deaths were reported in the city, the department said.

The number of micro-containment areas set up in Ahmedabad city further went down to 190 after the removal of ten and addition of six new areas based on the detection of new cases, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) said.

According to the civic body’s COVID-19 bulletin released on Sunday afternoon, there are 3,475 active cases in the city, with the west zone accounting for 622 cases, closely followed by the northwest zone with 619 cases.

The recovery rate in rural Ahmedabad stands at 95 percent with a total of 2,402 patients getting discharged so far, including 22 on Sunday. This part of the district has reported 2,529 COVID-19 cases so far, and 58 deaths, officials said.

Surat reports 283 fresh COVID-19 cases, tally reaches 29,319

The COVID-19 tally in Surat rose to 29,319 on Sunday with 283 fresh cases, while the death toll reached 951 after four patients succumbed to the infection, an official said.

He said 273 people were discharged during the day, of which 178 were in urban areas.

Of the four deaths, three were reported from rural parts of the district, the official said.

The Surat Municipal Corporation on Sunday said it had so far surveyed a total of 9,32,160 people in areas from where new cases were reported.

As many as 29,744 people are quarantined in the city, it said.

“The recovery rate in Surat city is 90.50 percent, with 20,105 people getting discharged so far. A total 780 patients are hospitalized in the city, out of which 232 are admitted in two government hospitals, namely Civil and SMIMER,” he said.

The two hospitals have a cumulative capacity of 3,046 beds and their occupancy rates are 5.7 percent and 12.8 percent, respectively, the SMC official said.

Of the nine talukas in rural Surat, Kamrej has reported the highest number of 1,540 cases, followed by Choryasi 1,485 and Bardoli 1,337, while Umarpada reported the lowest with 70 cases so far.

Kamrej recorded a maximum of 85 deaths, followed by Olpad and Bardoli with 37 each, local health officials said.
