The Infantry day on Tuesday (October 27, 2020) was commemorated by a solemn and befitting War Memorial Service in Wellington Military Station. Lt Gen YVK Mohan AVSM, SM, VSM, Commandant, Defence Service Staff College and the senior most Infantry Officer in Wellington Military Station along with Brigadier Rajeshwar Singh, SC, SM, Station Commander of Wellington Military Station and Commandant Madras Regimental Centre and Brigadier Ajit Singh, VSM (Retired), Senior most Infantry Veteran in Nilgiris and earmarked soldiers paid their obeisance to the brave Infantrymen of Indian Army who have made the supreme sacrifice of their lives in service of our Motherland by placing floral tributes at the War Memorial.
Infantry Day is celebrated every year on October 27 to commemorate the landing of the first Infantry Battalion of Indian Army in Srinagar and thereafter, the role of Indian Army’s Infantry in preventing the Pakistani Raiders from capturing Jammu and Kashmir.
The event is held in Wellington Military Station every year at the Madras Regiment War Memorial, the monolith structure which was constructed in 1950 to honour the supreme sacrifices of the ‘Thambis’ of Madras Regiment from all conflicts and wars since World War – II till date. The event is a befitting tribute to the Infantry of Indian Army for its valour, courage and sacrifice, a release from Defence PRO said.
