GANDHINAGAR, JAN 2

Taking a cue from the Uttar Pradesh government, the Gujarat Government has decided to recover compensation from those who resorted to violence during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) stir. The police department on Wednesday issued a statement, claiming that the damage incurred to police vans in Vadodara would be incurred from the miscreants who had vandalised the vehicles.

Gujarat, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled state, witnessed massive protests last month after the law to naturalise non-Muslim refugees was passed in the Parliament. As per videos circulating on social media, the protests were infiltrated by violent elements who resorted to stone-pelting at police vehicles.

In Vadodara, a few police vans were vandalised by the violent protesters. They allegedly threw stones at the vehicles and broke inflicted damage using sticks and rods. The Vijay Rupani government had assured to take strict action against all those found violating the law.

In Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced that the police department would analyse CCTV footages to identify all the anarchists and would be attaching their properties to recover damages caused to public properties. In several districts, notices seeking as much as Rs 14 lakh each have been dispatched to the alleged hooligans, threatening them with penal action if they are unable to pay the compensation.

The anti-CAA protests in Gujarat, along with other parts of India, erupted last month after the Parliament voted in favour of the law to naturalise Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, Jain and Parsi refugees from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan. A section of Muslims view the law, in prism of the proposed nationwide NRC exercise, as a ploy to strip them of their citizenship.
