With the landfall of Cyclone NIVAR near Puducherry no major damage has been caused to Railway infrastructure in Southern Railway.
After the landfall of Cyclone Nivar, the committed officers and staff of Southern Railway had undertaken extensive inspection of railway infrastructure such as permanent way (track), culverts, bridges, signaling and OHE installation to assess the nature of damage, if any, caused by the cyclone.
A thorough inspection was carried out especially in the sections of Chennai and Tiruchchirapalli divisions where the cyclone was forecast to have major ramifications. It was assessed during this intensive inspection that no major damage to railway infrastructure on account of Cyclone has been caused. In view of this, Southern Railway has resumed all its special train services, a release from the CPRO said.
As a precautionary measure and based on IMD forecast, Southern Railway had cancelled the operations of 69 Special train (mostly within Southern Railway) services fully and of 21 train services partially starting from 23rd Nov till date. 8 Special trains were diverted.
Now with railway infrastructure remaining unperturbed by cyclone few trains that were fully/partially cancelled for today have been reintroduced as per schedule;
Train No. 02759/2760 (Tambaram-Hyderabad-Tambaram Special), Train No 02601 (Dr. MGR Chennai Central – Mangalore Special) and Train No: 02639 (Dr.MGR Chennai Central – Alappuzha Special).

Resumption and rescheduling of Special Trains
Train No. 06181 Chennai Egmore – Sengottai Special Train of today 26th November scheduled to leave Chennai Egmore at 20.25 hrs is rescheduled to leave at 22.30 hrs (late start by 2 hours and 5 minutes)
Train No. 06723 Chennai Egmore – Kollam Special Train of today 26th November scheduled to leave Chennai Egmore at 20.10 hrs is rescheduled to leave at 23.30 hrs (late start by 3 hours and 20 minutes)
Similarly, the suburban train services in the Chennai region that were cancelled from 10:00 hours of 25-11-2020 until further notice have also been resumed from 15:00 hours of today with limited number of services to Arakkonam, Gummudipoondi and Chengalpattu.
Southern Railway has been keeping vigil from 23rd November and taken several precautionary measures for bracing the storm. Shri. John Thomas, General Manager, Southern Railway had several rounds of discussions on a daily basis from 23rd Nov, through video conferencing, with the concerned Principal Heads of the departments and all the Divisional railway Managers of the six divisions. These meetings were also attended by Shri. B.G Mallya, Additional General Manager. The dedicated work force had responded to this call of duty in these crisis hours and valiantly worked in the field to ensure no damage to infrastructure by taking all precautionary measures and waited in readiness for restoration of assets for putting trains back on track, says a release from Southern Railway CPRO B.Guganesan.
Resumption of Workmen specials from tomorrow (November 27, 2020)
Workmen specials which were suspended in suburban section of Chennai Division in view of NIVAR cyclone, resume services from 00:00 hrs of 27.11.2020 following the existing Workmen Special timings for essential services staff, another release from Chennai Division PRO A. Elumalai said.
