As Puducherry logged 987 new Covid-19 cases during last 24 hours taking the overall tally to 50,580 on Thursday, Lt Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan held a high level meet to ramp up Covid-`19 medical infrastructure and manpower need to meet exigencies in the union territory in coming days.
She also appealed the people to strictly follow Covid-19 protocols including wearing masks, keep 6 feet social distance etc on Thursday.
The number of active cases in the union territory stood at 5,923 which included 4,016 patients in home isolation, Director of Health and Family Welfare Services S Mohan Kumar said.

Four patients including two women succumbed to the virus during the last 24 hours ending 10 AM Thursday, he said, adding the death toll rose to 726.
Also, one patient hailing from West Bengal died in the government hospital here and has been listed under West Bengal account, Nodal officer of the Department of Health J Ramesh said.

With the identification of 987 new cases at the end of the examination of 4,675 samples, the overall count has risen to 50,580 in the union territory.
The Puducherry region alone accounted for 837 of the 987 fresh cases while Karaikal reported 89 followed by Yanam (40) and Mahe (21), Mohan Kumar said.
The Health department Director said that 43,931 patients had recovered and were discharged so far.
He said the fatality and recovery rates were 1.44 per cent and 86.85 per cent respectively.
As many as 7.48 lakh samples have been examined so far and it was found that 6.77 lakh of them were negative.
The Director said that 464 patients recovered and were discharged during the last 24 hours.
He said 30,657 healthcare workers and 18,174 frontline workers have been vaccinated so far.

The department also inoculated so far 1,10,842 people coming either under the category of those above 60 years or those above 45 years with comorbidities since March 1 under the second phase of vaccination.
Faculty & Staff tests Covid positive: Pondy varsity to shut till Apr 27
Pondicherry University will remain closed from April 23 to 27 after a section of staff and faculty tested positive for Covid-19.
A release from the Registrar in charge of the University said that some of the students had also been found to be infected by the virus at the end of examination of samples.
As a precautionary measure to prevent spread of the scourge, the University would remain closed till April 27 from Friday. All the students staying in hostels were asked to vacate and return home, the release added.
