Padma Shri awardee and Veteran ENT surgeon Dr S Kameswaran has passed away due to old age. He was 98. He breathed his last at 6 am on Saturday at his residence in Chennai, says a release from the Madras ENT Research Foundation.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, his wife Durga Stalin and Minister for Medical and Family Welfare Ma Subramanian paid homage in person to the mortal remains of Dr Kameswaran.
He was born in 1923, and had his early education in Loyola College and Madras Medical College and later trained in the UK where he got his FRCS from Edinburgh & Glasgow. He was the former Director of the Institute of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) at Madras Medical College.
He mentored generations of ENT surgeons from various parts of the country, many of whom continued his academic traditions across the length and breadth of this country and overseas. He also served as the Director of Basic Medical Sciences, Taramani of the University of Madras.
He was a surgeon to the former President of India R Venkataraman and a short-term Consultant to the World Health Organization.
Besides this, he was also a member of the 3-member Committee which was responsible for establishing the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University.
He shared a very happy and fulfilling life with his wife Professor Lalitha Kameswaran, Founder Vice-Chancellor of The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University & Sri Ramachandra Medical University. He had received numerous awards and accolades, including the Padmashri Award and Dr. BC Roy Award.
He is survived by his son ‘Padmashri’ Professor Mohan Kameswaran, Managing Director and Chief Surgeon, Madras ENT Research Foundation and daughter Dr. Chitra Sankaran, Professor of English at the National University of Singapore.
Dr Mohan Kameswaran, who is also a Padma Shri awardee, is now heading Tamil Nadu’s task force committee to tackle mucormycosis (black fungus).
Renowned medical professionals and leaders from across the country and globe expressed their condolences.
