The second wave of the coronavirus pandemic has come under control in Gujarat though the threat of coronavirus remains, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said on Tuesday, a day after the state reported less than 100 fresh cases in a day after a gap of 14 months.

In a virtual address, the CM said the fight against the pandemic is still on as coronavirus is still around.

Gujarat on Monday reported 96 new infections which took the cumulative caseload to 8,23,340, as per the state health department.

The state had reported 78 COVID-19 cases on April 14 last year and 127 cases a day later. On April 30 this year, when the second wave was at its peak, Gujarat recorded the highest 14,605 cases in a single day.

“The second wave of coronavirus is almost under control now. As against over 14,000 daily cases getting registered during its peak, less than 100 cases emerged yesterday. However, the virus is still not eradicated and our fight against COVID-19 is still on,” Rupani said while addressing the function to distribute uniforms to the students of Anganwadis.

14 lakh children enrolled in 53,029 Anganwadis will be given free uniforms

As per a release issued by the state government, Gujarat has become the first and only state in the country to provide uniforms to the Anganwadi students. Under this initiative, 14 lakh children enrolled in 53,029 Anganwadis or child care centres across Gujarat will be given free uniforms. The state government would spend Rs 36.28 crore on this scheme which is aimed at motivating these children, the chief minister said.

Reports less than 100 new cases for 2nd day; 2 die, 326 recover

Gujarat reported 93 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, the second straight day of under-100 daily count, taking the coronavirus tally to 8,23,433, while 326 patients recovered from the infection, the state health department said.

With two more COVID-19 fatalities, the state’s death toll rose to 10,056, it said. On Monday, Gujarat had reported 96 new infections. This was for the first time in more than 14 months that the single-day case count had dropped below the 100-mark in Gujarat.

The state had reported 78 COVID-19 cases on April 14 last year and 127 cases a day later. At the same time, 326 patients recovered during the day, pushing the number of such cases to 8,10,147, said the department in a release.

The state now has 3,230 active cases, it said. Surat district reported the highest number of 22 new cases, followed by Ahmedabad 20, Vadodara 15 and Rajkot eight, among others, it said.

As many as seventeen districts, out of total 33 in Gujarat, did not report any new case in the last 24 hours, the release said. Ahmedabad and Tapi districts reported one death each, said the department.

A total of 2,65,614 people received COVID-19 vaccine doses on Tuesday, taking the number of doses administered in the state so far to 2.,53,93,866, it said. Of these, 1.99 crore people have received their first dose and 55.31 lakh their second shot, the release said.

In the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, the COVID-19 tally rose to 10,527 with the addition of eight new cases, the local administration said. With seven patients getting discharged during the day, the number of recovered cases rose to 10,481, officials said. There are now 42 active cases in the UT, which has so far reported four deaths.

Gujarat’s COVID-19 figures are positive cases 8,23,433, new cases 93, death toll 10,056, discharged 8,10,147, active cases 3,230, people tested so far – figures not released.
