CHENNAI, OCT 18

Southern parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to receive heavy rains from Wednesday, October 20, for two to three days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted.

The Chengelpet district collector said on Monday that people must stay away from River Palar and bridges across it as 6,322 cusecs of water has been released from the Palar Anaicut in view of the rains in catchment areas.

While rains lashed several parts of the state on Sunday, October 17, across the Western Ghats, it will subside on Monday and Tuesday but will resume from Wednesday, IMD officials said.

From Wednesday, heavy rains are likely to occur in Pudukottai, Trichy, Madurai, and the delta districts as well as some other areas of south Tamil Nadu will receive moderate rains while north Tamil Nadu will experience scanty rains, the IMD said. The rains are following the emergence of a new weather system, the IMD added. N Puviarasan, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, told the media that a new weather system is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal off the Comorin region causing rains with high intensity in Tamil Nadu.

The IMD officials said light rains followed by thunderstorms are likely in Namakkal and Villupuram districts on Monday, October 18, with possibilities of isolated rains in coastal areas of the state and in some districts of south Tamil Nadu. However, weathermen said the rains would not be intense on Monday.

Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari districts of Tamil Nadu had experienced heavy rains in the past two days with Papanasam in Tirunelveli district recording 27 cm of rainfall on Sunday morning, while Pechiparai in Kanniyakumari district received 22 cm of rainfall.

The IMD has predicted no rains or scanty rains in Chennai till Tuesday, October 19.

Issuing a flood alert, the Chengelpet district collector said on Monday that people must stay away from River Palar and bridges across it as 6,322 cusecs of water has been released from the Palar Anaicut in view of the rains in catchment areas.

The water released from the anaicut in Ranipet district is expected to reach the Chengelpet district border of Palar soon, said DC AR Rahul Nadh, adding that considering the downpour, there is a likelihood of more inflows.

“Hence, people should not use bridges and wash clothes or utilize the river for any other purpose. The over 35 villages on the banks of the river in Chengelpet district are being monitored,” he said.
