CHENNAI, NOV 1
Three days ahead of the Festival of Lights, the Tamil Nadu government on Monday announced a limited window for bursting crackers on Diwali, which is on November 4. The government said that only green crackers will be allowed to be burst in line with the Supreme Court directive.
According to a statement from the Environment, Climate Change and Forest Department, crackers are allowed to be burst between 6 and 7.00 am and 7 pm to 8 pm on Diwali.
The government statement recalled the 2018 Supreme Court order directing that firecrackers can be manufactured only by using raw materials that will reduce emission levels. The statement said the same has been reiterated in the court’s October 29 orde,r including banning the use of barium salts in firecrackers and manufacturing and selling of joined firecrackers.
“People are advised to celebrate the festival responsibly so that their action does not lead to environmental pollution,” the government statement read.
“The government of Tamil Nadu is making a sincere appeal to people to celebrate the festival of lights in harmony with nature,” it added.
