The 2 (TN) Naval Unit of NCC (National Cadet Corps), Madurai won the Overall Best Naval NCC Unit Championship trophy at the annual inter-unit competition held from Jan 1, 2019 to Jan 31 2019 at Chennai, Tamilnadu. The unit has been adjudged as the Overall Second Runner up and was awarded the Best NCC Unit Championship Trophy 2019-20, Commander VP Senthil, Commanding Officer of Madurai said.
The Best NCC Unit Championship Trophy was awarded by Minister of Education of Tamil Nadu K.A. Sengottaiyan to Commander VP Senthil, Commanding Officer of Madurai in Chennai in the presence of Senior Officers of the Army, Navy and Air Force and Civil dignitaries at a function held on February 6.
Commenting on this feat, Commander VP Senthil said, “The 2 (TN) naval unit of NCC (National Cadet Corps), Madurai among India’s largest NCC Group has scored the highest points of 1,148. It was the top scorer among all Naval Units of the Directorate and has also scored more points than all the Air Wing NCC Units of the Directorate. In recognition of this feat, the unit has been adjudged as the Overall Second Runner up in the Best NCC Unit Championship Trophy 2019-20. The winning team comprise cadets from government schools, colleges and government-aided institutions. Despite facing 50% staff shortage, our unit Staff toiled hard to achieve this feat.”
The Directorate of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Andaman Nicobar has conducted the competition for Overall Best NCC Unit Championship which saw the participation of all the 59 tri-service NCC Units (Army, Navy & Airforce). Six NCC units among them have secured more than 1,000 points out of 1,200 points which were felicitated with the cash awards by the Directorate.
The Directorate of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Andaman Nicobar consists of six Major NCC Group Headquarters namely Coimbatore, Madurai, Madras ‘A’, Madras ‘B’, Trichy, and Puducherry. Two topmost scorers or units of every Group Headquarters have been sent to the Directorate in Chennai for final selection, Commander Senthil added.
The competition-cum-selection of the Best Unit was based on the various vital factors such as firing of cadets, social service activities, community development activities, enrolment of cadets, conduct of training camps by Units, ANO (Associate NCC Officers) performance, results in NCC ‘C’ Certificate examinations, achievement of cadets in the All India Thal Sainik Camp / Nau Sainik Camp / Vayu Sainik Camp, All India Mavalankar Shooting championship, selection/ entry of cadets into defence services both Officers and PBOR (Personnel Below Officer Rank) category, Best Cadet, cadets selected for YEP (Youth Exchange Programme), OSD (Over Seas Deployment) to foreign countries, mountaineering expedition and any other individual achievements by the NCC cadets in State and National level events.

Also for the last two years, the cadets of the unit were continuously getting selected for the International Youth Exchange Programme and Overseas Deployment. Cadet Ashwin Balaji was selected and sent to Russia and Cadet Balakrishnan and Vignesh were selected for Overseas Deployment to South Africa, Mauritius, Mozambique and Seychelles which is the most pride moment and dream for every NCC cadet in his life.
Girl cadets play stellar roles
For the first time in the history of the unit, Senior Wing girl cadet Pavithra has won the Bronze Medal in the XXIX All India GV Mavalankar Shooting. Also another girl cadet Anbu Selvi has won the Silver Medal in the Best Cadet Category in All India Nau Sainik Camp.
Winning streak continues in Republic Day Camp 2020 too
Also, many Gold and Silver Medals were won by our cadets in the All India Republic Day Camp 2020 at New Delhi and in the All India Nau Sainik Camp.

Thanks to our training officials, Madurai Unit cadets have won various Gold Medals in Semaphore (Naval Communication), Whaler Rigging, Health & Hygiene exam, Service subjects, Best Cadets and Drill competitions in the All India Nau Sainik Camp held at Vishakapatnam. The cadets have also won the Best Directorate Championship Trophy in the All India Nau Sainik Camp.
