Kathak legend and Padma Vibhushan awardee Pandit Birju Maharaj has passed away of a heart attack at the age of 83, a family member said on Monday.
As news of the Kathak maestro’s death broke, condolences poured in on social media, with many celebrities and famous personalities expressing grief over his passing.
Spiritual Guru and Ram Katha preacher Morari Babu said he was “deeply saddened” at the demise of Pandit Birju Maharaj and recognised the immense contribution the Kathak legend made to his art.
“Deeply saddened by the sudden demise of a legendary Padma Vibhushan Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj . We have had a great bond with legendary Padma Vibhushan Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj. He has cherished that special connection with Chitrakoot Dham. Whenever we requested the honour of his presence on Hanuman Jayanti or any other event, he wholeheartedly accepted our invitation and used to visit Talgajarda. Such a renowned Kathak, par excellence, he also excelled in singing as well as playing a variety of instruments.” Morari Bapu said in his condolence message.
“ I pray to God that his soul may find peace in the heaven. My condolences to his family and students,” the spiritual leader added.
