CHENNAI, FEB 22
It was a poetic justice for BJP that opposes Hijab all over the country. Ms Ponnammal, a BJP leader, who won from Ward No 8 in Tenkasi Municipality in Southern Tamil Nadu, received her election certificate from returning officer Ms Farzana in Hijab.
The polling for 12,607 seats in 21 municipal corporations, 138 municipalities and 490 panchayats was held on Sunday.
During the polling, a BJP agent had insisted a Muslim woman to remove her Hijab when she entered the polling station in Tiruppur.
The BJP agent insisted her to remove Hijab despite the fact that the booth officials said they had verified her identity from the voter’s list.

Identified as R. Girirajan, the BJP man said that her photo did not match in the voter’s list. The police deployed on duty said that the photos were taken long back and that is why photos of many voters did not exactly match. But Girirajan disagreed and shouted that there was bogus polling going on at the booth.
As this led to tension in the area, Giriraj was arrested immediately. He was remanded to judicial custody till March 4.
When a BJP winner was given her election certificate by a Hijab-wearing Muslim woman official, social activist T Azeez Luthfullah commented, “what a Poetic Justice!”
