Around 8500 chickens were burnt to death in a fire that broke out in a poultry farm in Annur, approximately 40 kms away from Coimbatore city in Tamil Nadu, police said on Sunday.

The fire was reported at 8 pm on Saturday in a poultry farm. The farm was run on the land belonging to Ganesh from the Ambothi village.

The fire and rescue service team managed to put off the blaze in two hours. The entire area was engulfed in thick smoke.

Various equipment and chicken feeds also got burnt in the fire. The loss has been estimated at Rs 12 lakh, fire officials said.
