The Indian Coast Guard on Thursday announced that it had conducted an exercise off the Gujarat coast near the port town of Vadinar to assess the response to oil spill and other pollutions, an ICG official said.

The Regional Level Pollution Response Exercise “Swachchh Samundra NW-2022” was conducted off Vadinar in Gulf of Kutch for three days from Monday to Wednesday, April 11-13, 2022 under the aegis of Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (North West).
The exercise was conducted to reinforce response mechanism for oil pollution incidents, evaluate the preparedness for pollution response operations in this highly ecologically sensitive area and enable the Indian Coast Guard to fine tune the actions required as per provisions of the National Oil Spill & Disaster Contingency Plan (NOSDCP).
“We do this from time to time with an aim to demonstrate the capabilities of different types of pollution response equipments held by the coast guard,” a Coast Guard official said.
The exercise was conducted in coordination with District Administration of Jamnagar and Khambhalia in three phases, including a table top exercise simulating oil spill from a tanker, real-time demonstration of oil spill scenario and shore line cleanup. The pollution response assets of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), including ICG air assets and oil handling agencies viz Nayara Energy LTD, IOCL, BORL, Reliance, Adani, HEML and DPT offshore oil terminal, GMB ports, Forest & Fisheries Departments and Kandla Port participated in exercise.
Coast Guard District HQ 15 at Okha coordinated the exercise on behalf of the ICG.
