In a raid on shops selling counterfeit edible oils of a leading brand, the Ahmedabad police have arrested four persons following the seizure of 37 counterfeit Fortune Sunflower 15-litre oil tins.
Following the direction of Zone 2 DCP, a team of Local Crime Branch (LCB) has conducted raids in three shops at Khanpur and Paldi areas of Ahmedabad on Tuesday. Total 37 tins of counterfeit 15 ltr Fortune Sunflower oil approximately worth Rs 1.3 lakh were seized. Several mismatches were found in the labels on oil tins.
Vipul Thakkar, owner of Ganesh Kirana store in Shahpur, Nikunj Mehta owner of Yogiraj Distributor and Alpesh Thakkar owner of Shri Narayan Provision store in Paldi, and Ashfak Kholiawala were arrested by the police in view of the seizure of counterfeit oil tins.
Mahesh Patel who is said to be the supplier of oil tins to all these retailers is absconding. Mahesh Patel was also involved as a main accused in the similar counterfeit raid actions conducted by the Adani Wilmar officials and police last year at Naranpura.
All the accused have been booked under sections 406, 420, 482, 483, 486 and 114 of the Indian Penal Code, sections 51 and 63 of Copyright Act, the police said.
The Ahmedabad police have been investigating further to ascertain the source of the counterfeit oil tins.
