Necessity is the mother of invention, so an army subedar, deployed in different terrains has invented a light weight multi-functional tool for digging in shortest possible time to have an upper hand over the enemy, and won the laurels of all, a Defence release said.
In recognition of his invention, Subedar Abdullah Baig of Basantar Battalion under Sindh Brigade was felicitated for making a ‘Multipurpose Digging Tool’ by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of Army Day, January 15, 2020 at New Delhi.
Commenting on his invention, Subedar Abdulla Baig said, “The Indian Army operates in varying terrain conditions, wherein troops have to deploy tactically in their intended area of operations within a short span of time. To facilitate speedy and effective deployment, manual digging of defences has to be resorted to even in the face of the enemy. To facilitate such digging, the troops have to carry a variety of digging tools which are bulky and thus increases the battle loads to be carried by the soldier and at time affects our efficiency.”
Based on his experience, Subedar Abdulla Baig has fabricated a Multipurpose Digging Tool, which juxtaposes the functionality of numerous tools into one entity, the release added.
The Multipurpose Digging Tool fabricated by Subedar Abdullah Baig, is light weight, modular, conducive to carry and thus enhances the operational efficiency of the soldier. The tool has been fabricated from readily available materials in an Infantry Unit with very minimal modification, and cost. The fabricated tool facilitates a soldier to carryout multiple tasks and reduce the overall weight of tools by more than half thus increasing the efficiency of a soldier during move and other operational tasks.
