In a gruesome act in the state capital, a panchayat president belonging to the Main Opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) was killed by a gang in Minjur town of Thiruvallur district.
The 44-year-old leader has been the most influential person in the area as the Panchayat President.
The incident took place on Sunday night. The deceased has been identified as K Manoharan.
He contested and won the Kondakarai Panchayat Council election in the recently concluded rural local government elections.
The murder took place when Manoharan was travelling in his vehicle. The gang members intercepted the AIADMK leader near Kuruvimedu.
The accused who were in a truck got down and killed Manoharan and fled from the spot.
After killing him, they fled from the site in the lorry. The gang has also beat Manoharan’s wife and daughters who tried to stop the mob from beating Manoharan.
The assassination of AIADMK leader Manoharan has caused a stir in the area. Minjur police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
The police have started the investigation.
