  • AM/NS India to meet around 45% of its power needs through renewable energy sources, and enhance use of natural gas by 2030
  • AM/NS India to generate 350 MW power in the expansion projects  by using excess process gases of the plant and this will replace the equal amount fossil fuel
  • Company to plant 3.5 lakh trees at its Hazira complex to increase the Green cover.

HAZIRA-SURAT, JUNE 5

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AM/NS India), a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, has announced a series of environmental improvement measures at its Hazira complex to protect Mother Nature by reiterating its commitment on World Environment Day,.

As a part of its climate plan to mitigate the impact of climate change, AM/NS India is committed to meeting around 45% of its power needs through renewable energy sources by 2030. It plans to increase the use of scrap in steel melting shops to reduce iron ore requirement, and enhance the use of natural gas and coke oven gas injection in blast furnaces to cut down on coal usage. Similarly, hot air from the sinter plant will be used for heating combustion air to save fuel and steam generation.

AM/NS India is working on doubling the production capacity in phases at Hazira to 18 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) at an investment of Rs. 50,000 crore. In the proposed expansion, 350 MW power will be generated using Top Recovery Gas Turbines of new blast furnaces, waste heat recovery boiler utilising sensible heat at Coke Dry Quenching of Coke Oven Plants and Captive Power Plant utilising excess process gases of the plant. These actions will help lower fossil fuel requirements.

“We are committed to protect and conserve the environment in the best possible manner, under growing challenges of climate change. World Environment Day is an apt occasion to reiterate and demonstrate our commitment & solidarity to the planet. AMNS has invested substantially under various  initiatives to bring improvement in emission, energy efficiency material conservation,” said Santosh Mundhada, Executive Director at AM/NS India.

The measures include an additional acid recovery unit for recovering the maximum acid and thereby reducing waste generation. AM/NS India has also implemented the latest air pollution control measures with an investment of Rs. 200 crore to meet the proposed environmental standards of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.

AM/NS India is also planting 3.5 lakh trees at its Hazira complex to develop a green belt. The green belt development will help in controlling air pollution, noise, and soil erosion in the area, and is an important step toward sustainable development.

The Hazira complex already has a green belt spread over 136 hectares. The number of existing trees is over 2.89 lakh. Following the extensive tree plantation drive, the green belt will swell to over 219 hectares. Some of the tree species being planted in the Hazira complex include neem, Bengali baval, amaltas, yellow cassia, gulmohar, peepal, banyan, champa, tulip, jamun, Indian almond, and many more. The trees being planted have been recommended by Asheem Srivastav, former principal chief conservator of forests and chairman of Gujarat Biodiversity Board.
