AHMEDABAD, JULY 6

In an attempt to create greater awareness about HIV and reach out to migrant workers, leading construction company Ranjit Buildcon organised an HIV awareness programme in Gandhinagar on Wednesday.

The programme was organised in collaboration with the Gujarat AIDS Awareness and Prevention Unit (GAP), a unit of the International Society for Research on Civilization Diseases and on Environment at Ranjit Buildcon’s casting yard in Gandhinagar from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Over 100 workers participated in the programme.

Dr Nandini Kapoor, Country Head of UN Aids Control Society (UNAIDS), Dr Shweta Singh, UNAIDS consultant, Dr Rajesh Gopal, Additional Director of Gujarat State AIDS Cell, Manu Vaghela, Deputy Director of Gujarat AIDS Control Society, and Dr Ketul, Joint Director of Gujarat AIDS Control Society, graced the occasion with their presence.

Also present were Dr Harish Patel, District TB Officer of Gandhinagar city, Dr Deepak Patel, District TB Officer of Gandhinagar rural, and Prasad Sant, Team Leader and Technical Support Unit of Gujarat AIDS Control Society.

“A lot of progress has been made in checking the spread of HIV and AIDS in recent years, but many people are still falling prey to HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases due to a lack of proper awareness. We organised this awareness programme to create awareness about HIV among hundreds of migrant workers and staff working in the casting yard and surrounding areas. The programme was also aimed at doing away with the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS,” said Gaurav Patel, Director, Ranjit Bulidcon Limited.

The participating migrant workers and staff were informed about high-risk behaviours that cause HIV infection. They were also apprised about various social protection schemes they are eligible for.

The number of HIV patients in India is estimated at more than 23 lakh, while the number is estimated at over 1 lakh in Gujarat.

As a responsible company, Ranjit Buildcon is committed to contributing to healthcare and various other social causes.
