Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, on Friday, praised his former party colleague and BJP leader Khushbu Sundar for ‘standing up for the right thing’ over her tweet against the release of of 11 convicts by Gujarat in the Bilkis Bano case.

The actor-turned-politician and activist championing the cause of women had termed the release “an insult to humankind and womanhood.”

Sundar had tweeted on Thursday: “A woman who is raped, assaulted, brutalised and her soul scarred for life must get justice. No man who has been involved in it should go free. If he does so, it’s an insult to humankind and womanhood. #BilkisBano or any woman, needs support, beyond politics n ideologies. Period.”

Reacting to her tweet, the Thiruvananthapuram wrote, “Hear hear, @khushsundar! Proud to see you standing up for the right thing, rather than the right wing.”

On August 15, all the 11 convicts sentenced to life imprisonment in the 2002 case of Bilkis Bano’s gang rape and murder of her seven family members during the communal riots walked out of the Godhra sub-jail after the Gujarat government allowed their release under its remission policy.
