Southern Railway General Manager BG Mallya has launched the fortnight-long special cleanliness drive, ’Swachhata Pakhwada’, at its headquarters here on Friday.
The “Swachhata Pakhwada”, which commenced on September 16, will conclude on October 2, Gandhi Jayanthi. It is being observed all over the Railways with a view to ensure visible improvement in cleanliness at stations, trains, offices, colonies, workshops, maintenance depots, hospitals, etc.
Southern Railway General Manager administered the Swachhata Pledge to all the Principal Heads of Departments, Officers and staff of Headquarters on this occasion. Later, the General Manager distributed saplings to officers and staff.

All the Officers and Staff at the six Divisions of Southern Railway – Chennai, Salem, Tiruchchirappalli, Madurai, Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram, also joined in taking the pledge, through Video Conferencing.
A special cleaning program was organized in the Railway Office Complex and Officers and staff actively participated in the drive, collecting and removing trashes and garbage along with dried leaves from the premises. The Environment & Housekeeping Management (EnHM) wing of Southern Railway Headquarters is organizing various theme based cleanliness drives and campaigns during the Cleanliness fortnight with the help of NGOs, Scouts & Guides, voluntary organisations and volunteers.
Employees will contribute to the drive by cleaning their workspace and participating in various awareness programmes. Intensive cleanliness drives focusing on various aspects of cleanliness will be held apart from regular inspections by Officers and Supervisors in trains and railway stations.
Southern Railway appeals to rail users to join hands with it in maintaining higher standards of cleanliness in trains, railway stations and tracks.
