CM Stalin to virtually unveil ‘Kutty Cop’ for Student Road Safety Awareness in Kovai on Oct 12

Chief Minister M K Stalin will unveil the ‘Kutty Cop’, a Student Road Safety Awareness Project of Coimbatore-based NGO ‘UYIR’, on Wednesday.

Addressing the reporters on Monday, Dr S Rajasekaran, Managing Trustee of UYIR Trust said that the Chief Minister will inaugurate the ‘Kutty Cop’ programme from Chennai through video conferencing. While the state Minister for Electricity, Prohibition and Excise V Senthil Balaji will participate in person at the live event to be held at the CODISSIA. Over 4,000 students from various schools in and around Coimbatore will participate in the event.

  • The Chief Minister will also release Road Safety Awareness Education Teacher’s Manuals and Student Workbooks for students of classes 3 to 5 and classes 6 to 8

The Chief Minister will also release ‘Kutty Cop’ Road Safety Awareness Education Teacher’s Manuals and Student Workbooks for students of classes 3 to 5 and classes 6 to 8, he added.

Dr Rajasekar also said that the trust launched the ‘Kutty Cop’ programme as a pilot project in around 40 schools on pilot basis, based on the positive results and feedback, it has now been included in the curriculum and is all set to be implemented in schools across Coimbatore District from 2022-23 academic year with the support of Tamil Nadu government, he added.

UYIR Trust had in the past implemented various activities for road safety in the city.

  • Installed ANPR Cameras with indigenous software for automatic registration of traffic offences at a cost of Rs 4.5 Crores.
  • Identified 18 black spots for road accidents in the city along with the City police and taken remedial measures which have reduced the accidents in the city.
  • Installed 12 new traffic signal junctions.
  • Provided 70 body cameras to the city police,
  • Involving college student volunteers in on-site road safety activities.

UYIR was established as a Charitable Trust as ‘People’s Movement for Road Safety’ by the citizens of Coimbatore. It has 12 Trustees and 10 Apex committee members with Sanjay Jayavarthanavelu as Chairman and Dr S Rajasekaran of Ganga Hospital as the Managing Trustee. The District Collector, Commissioner of Police and the Corporation Commissioner are the Ex-Officio trustees of the organisation.
