An old bridge in Gujarat’s Surendranagar district collapsed on Sunday, with initial reports indicating that 10 people were swept away and resulting in injuries to four individuals. The mishap unfolded when a 40-ton dumper attempted to traverse the bridge on a panchayat road near Wadhwan city, despite the prohibition on heavy vehicle access.
An old bridge collapsed in the Vastadi area of Gujarat’s Surendranagar district on Sunday, resulting in multiple vehicles, including a dumper and motorcycles, plunging into the river below.
According to initial reports, at least 10 people were swept away in the incident, and six people have been rescued. The search for the remaining six people is underway.
Police and government officials rushed to the spot and rescued people were shifted to nearby hospitals.
According to District Collector KC Sampath, the bridge over Bhogavo river, connecting the National Highway to the Chura tehsil, was a 40-year-old structure. It was the responsibility of the state Road and Buildings Department The authorities had restricted access to the bridge for heavy vehicles.
It appears that the bridge collapsed after a dumper tried to pass over it.
According to sources, the injured were taken to the hospital for treatment. This accident happened near Vastadi village of Surendranagar district. As soon as the bridge collapsed, there was a scream all around.
As soon as the news was received, the local people and the village sarpanch reached the spot. After this, the police and administration team reached the spot and started the rescue work. Information has also come to light that local people were demanding to build a new bridge for a long time.
