AHMEDABAD, MARCH 4
City police seem to have decided to pay tribute to the father of the Indian Constitution, Dr B R Ambedkar, 70 years after the Constitution came into force on January 26, 1950. A circular was recently issued directing that a portrait or statue of Dr Ambedkar be put up at all police stations, ACP (assistant commissioner of police) and DCP (deputy commissioner of police) offices across the city.
Circular number 423/ 2020 issued on February 28 with the subject “71st Republic Day” states, “It is being informed that you will have to put a portrait/statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar at the office or branches being headed by you. All have been directed to act accordingly because we are observing the 71st year of the introduction of the Indian Constitution.”
DCP, control, Vijay Patel, who issued the circular, said the decision was with an eye on the birth anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on April 14. “Besides, we have been celebrating 70 years of the Indian Constitution, due to which the decision was taken,” said Patel.
He further said that they received an order from the home department to put up portraits of Dr Ambedkar. Patel said every police station must have a portrait of Dr Ambedkar now.
Police officials said police stations or other offices at present only have portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
“We began putting up portraits of Mahatma Gandhi after they were presented by a trust three years ago. In October 2019, it was directed to put up portraits of Sardar Patel during the ‘Run for Unity’ event. We do not have portraits of Dr Babasaheb in our police stations,” said a police official.
The official added that this should have done earlier because the police administration and implementation of the law are governed by the Constitution.
City police commissioner Ashish Bhatia also said that the circular to put up portraits of Dr Ambedkar was issued recently.
City police get ISO certification for efficiency
Ahmedabad police have received ISO certifications for efficiency in work, effectiveness, and consistency and achieving health and safety standards. Ashish Bhatia, the city police commissioner, said that ISO certification is a yearlong process. “The certificates are issued individually for units based on the processes they follow. We made several changes to the SOP for this,” he said.
